I
have to admit that I was a little concerned whether I'd be able to tolerate the drive (12-1/2 hours) and whether I'd be able to enjoy my
time away and whether I'd be able to keep up with everyone else and not
be a burden. Thankfully my concerns were for naught ... I really didn't
have much pain and was able to do whatever I wanted. The only activity
I wasn't able to participate in was the snorkeling ... and only because
I couldn't wear a mask over my glasses and I'm as blind as a bat
without them. ;-)
The
beach in the panhandle is absolutely the most beautiful beach I've ever
seen. Unfortunately, it's not the flat, solid beach conducive to
walking (like the beach at Hilton Head). Even so, it was the beach, and
we loved every minute of our time.
We
were blessed with beautiful weather the first 7 days ... sunny and warm
in spite of rain in the forecasts. Alas, the rain finally materialized
the final 3 days ... thankfully there was a break in the rain each day
so we could get back out to the beach.
This was our view crossing over to Destin - our first view of water. I was practically giddy with excitement, and this was just the bay. ;-)
Our view at lunch that first day in Destin.
The beach at Destin.
We got to the condo in Navarre Beach an hour before we could check in ... so we spent that hour out on the beach.
Just minutes after we checked in, we saw this fly-by. This was taken from the balcony of our condo.
Another pic taken from our balcony. The view was spectacular!
T#2 and I went for an early-morning walk along the beach and saw a sea turtle nest. Speaking of sea turtles, DD, DSIL and I were out in the water later that morning and saw a sea turtle swim by - no more than 15-20 yards from us. It was spectacular!
The sun was too far north to get photos of a sunrise or sunset on the Gulf, so this was the best I could do.
As I mentioned, I couldn't snorkel, but that didn't mean that I didn't see anything while on the boat waiting. That's a jelly fish. Yes, some of our snorkelers were stung, but the stings were minor and alleviated with a spray of vinegar.

DH and I didn't head straight home Saturday morning. We decided to go check out Ft. Pickens and were treated to a show by the Blue Angels (stationed over at Pensacola Naval Air Station, just across Escambia Bay). I got a video which you can view here: https://www.instagram.com/p/BJDklTeDHt9/?taken-by=nana_quilts.
The shells I found on my walks along the beach.
Don't forget that you can click on the pictures to see them even better. ;-)
I
am not exaggerating when I say that this was the best week of my life.
The memories we made are priceless, and I will cherish them the rest of
my life.
Kathy
I wondered when you would blog again :) I also wondered how you were doing at the beach and hoped it would be a great vacation for you. I have been to that area numerous times DH's stepfather was stationed in Pensacola years ago and we spent some time there then - it has been a long time but remember the beaches and the jelly fish well!
ReplyDeleteOh, Kathy! I'm so happy you were able to finally have some beach time! I've never been any farther south than Panama City, but it was beautiful there. I loved the clear, greenish/blue water, and the powdery white sand.
ReplyDeleteI'm also glad to hear that you are doing so well! That's the best news of all :)
Such a gorgeous part of Florida. So glad you had a wonderful restful family holiday in your happy place Kathy. Nothing quite like the ocean to restore the soul.
ReplyDeleteI am SOOOOO glad you had a great time & enjoyed yourself & your family & all the beauty the beach has!
ReplyDeleteI had to look up on Google maps when you went. It looks beautiful. I'm so glad you had the best time.
ReplyDeleteSo glad you are home safe and had a wonderful vacation with your family. It sounds like a great time was had by all.
ReplyDeleteSounds like just what you needed, and it looks like a beautiful place!
ReplyDeleteMy goodness, the Ts are passing you up in height. How does that happen? : )
I am so glad you had this opportunity.
What a great time you had!!! I'm so glad you got back to a beach and were able to enjoy your family. I've never been to that part of Florida (we used to live way south in Fort Lauderdale) but it looks wonderful. It's wonderful to hear that all of your fears were unfounded - yay!!! The T's are really growing - you'll be looking up to all of them one of these days. ~Jeanne
ReplyDeleteWell, welcome home! We missed you but so thrilled that you had such a wonderful time. Destin is a beautiful beach. It's been years since we've been and should plan to go back. Hugs!
ReplyDeleteI'm so thrilled that you were able to enjoy the time away. We were stationed at Pensacola when my husband was in flight training and our apartment opened out onto Escambia Bay. We loved the Panhandle beaches. Thanks for the memories!!! There is nothing like a Blue Angels performance. Welcome home.
ReplyDeleteI'm so pleased to learn that your travel to and time at the beach was so wonderful, Kathy. What a treat for you after the past challenging months. The beach looks so refreshing and fun. Lucky you! I love the photo of you with the 4 Ts. That's one to enlarge and frame (imho, anyway).

Sounds like you had a fabulous time. So happy to hear!
ReplyDeleteWhat a perfect vacation! I have yet to visit any of the beaches in Florida. I grew up in Southern California and was convinced that our beaches were the best. After looking at your pictures, I feel a tug to experience the joy that you felt. Having family with you must have just been incredible. You look beautiful and very happy! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteSo happy your best memories were made surrounded by your fave people too! Thanks for writing here about your trip and all it meant to you.. it is great that you share & I love your shell collection too! Maybe a future craft project with your T;s in a frame?? lol! :) Kathi
ReplyDeleteSounds Awesome!! So glad you were able to make so many special memories with the T's and family. I've been to Pensacola once, and now I want to go back. Beautiful pictures.
ReplyDeleteSo glad you had such a wonderful time at the beach with your family. I love all the pictures. It looks like a beautiful place. Of course, it's the beach, so it has to be pretty wonderful.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful time with your loved ones and the beach!!! I am the same way - can't pass up a beach EVER! And you had some special treats as well - the Blue Angels were here when they lost a member several months back - we were all devastated. They are truly a sight to see soaring up there in such perfect unison! And sea turtles!!!! I've never seen one - so jealous! That's a lovely shell haul too - my favorite beach activity :*). Many Nashvillians go to Destin for beach time but we've never been. We're hoping to do that one summer soon :*)
ReplyDeleteI've been soo behind in my blogging that I am just getting to this post, but I did catch some of your pics on instagram and facebook. What a wonderful, WONDERFUL vacation! Soo glad you got such a nice long time in your happy place. I can't think of anything a whole lot better either. I'd have to love to see that sea turtle soo close...what a treat! Hope you have a good week!
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy you got to go and have such a wonderful time.
ReplyDeleteLovely trip for you! One of my favorite destinations in days gone by. XO
