Welcome to Summer

Once again, Spring was short-lived.  It was only a little over 3 weeks ago that we had lows in the upper 30s.  Now our weekend forecast is for highs near 100.

It’s been a fairly busy week here at Chez Nana.  Monday I finished up the last kaleidoscope block and starting piecing together the blocks into rows.  I also spent some time tidying up my sewing room, putting away the blue fabrics … and have started to think about what I might want to work on next.  I think I’ve narrowed it down to a cake stand quilt.
I am thinking of setting the blocks on point with alternating blocks, like this:
I’m partial to two-color quilts, so I am leaning toward white/offwhite and a yet-to-be-determined color.  I’d thought about choosing white for the alternating blocks, but I have to admit that after seeing the quilt above, I like the idea of using a variation of the color for the alternating blocks.  I may not have enough yardage to do that, not even for a smaller quilt, so there may be a road trip to Homestead Hearth in the not-so-distant future.

As you may remember, Tuesdays are chemo days … this week I had treatment #20 in total, with 4 more to go.  Thankfully my WBC and ANC were high enough for chemo - whew!  My treatment was early morning … I was the first patient in the infusion center.  It made for an early morning, but it left enough time in the day for DD and me to take T#2 shopping for cowgirl boots … she’ll be leaving on Sunday for horse camp.  On our way back home, I asked her if she’d be mucking out stables … I was feeling quite proud of myself that I used the proper term “muck out” until she corrected me that she’d be mucking out stalls, not stables.  Oops!

I got all my rows pieced by Wednesday afternoon.
I will spare you all a close-up as my points aren't perfect ... there are 6 layers of fabric where the points come together, so trying to get my points all perfect would simply be an exercise in futility ... I'm good with close.  I was about ready to start piecing the rows together when we unexpectedly lost electricity for about an hour.

Since it was a nice day, I chose to instead go out and take a walk about the yard, checking on my flowers.  My hydrangea is surprising me … the last two summers it’s produced a single bloom and barely survived.  This spring it’s already got 3-4 blooms and a dozen buds that are going to bloom before too much longer.  My balloon flowers are budding … unfortunately only 2 of the 5 plants I planted are still alive.  My spirea has started blooming, my butterfly bush has started to bloom as well, and my hostas are going to be blooming in just a few more days.

T#1’s youth group leader has been posting pictures of their mission trip on Facebook, which I’ve “borrowed” to share.  The kids have been leading VBS this week … and were able to take in a Texas Rangers baseball game.  I can’t wait to hear all about it when he gets back.

Thursday was a busy day. DD is taking her last nursing pre-requisite this summer, so I've been "drafted" to take the Ts to swim practice on Thursdays.  And yes, she really had to twist my arm.  ha!  It means an early morning get-up, but I was able to catch a quick power nap when I got home this afternoon, which revived me enough to get out for a nice, long walk after dinner.

I'm planning to meet a dear friend for lunch ... and to spend the rest of my day in the sewing room.  I am ready to start piecing the rows together.

I hope that whatever you have planned for today includes a little something that brings you joy ... have a great day!
Kathy

  1. You are SO busy! Your Kaleidoscope quilt came out great. Looks perfect to me. Love the idea of a color in the alternate block. A road trip to pick out fabrics for it sounds fun. Enjoy those T's.

  3. Good morning! I am loving the cake stand pattern! It will make for a really pretty quilt I am sure. And your Kaleidoscope quilt came out SOOO good. I love it. I am considering doing what you seem to like in the two colored quilts. I sooo like the way that looks. I am hoping to finish up Claire's outfit today so I can begin the new quilt on Monday. I am finally "in the mood" again for another quilt, lol. Won't be long and I will have to start considering Christmas projects, lol. But they always take me a while. Glad your staying busy...flowers look good....Enjoy those
T's., though I know you will. Have a good week-end!

  7. Loving your flowers and that beautiful blue quilt. I like that next one your getting ready to make. Can't wait to see the colors you choose. And isn't it so sad that you need to go shopping for the material. I bet that really hurt your feelings. lol

  8. I'll stay tuned to see what colors you pick for the cake stand quilt. From here, your points look great on the blue and white quilt! Don't you just love grandchildren and their correct terminology? I love listening to them. So very glad you were able to have chemo #20. Keep cool! ~Jeanne

  10. Yes, I love your choice for your next quilting project as well. And, your finished project is so pretty. I'm sure I would see no flaws no matter how close up you pictured it. :o)) Have a wonderful weekend!

  11. Kathy, do you ever notice how your photos look when their in other bloggers' sidebars? I noticed your blue quilt in feedly and hadn't managed to click through to leave a comment. But I noticed the photo on my blog's sidebar. Wow! What a striking quilt! Just gorgeous! I keep pushing aside the idea of a blue-and-white or red-and-white or any-color-and-white quilt but then when I see one like yours I reconsider. One of these days....

  12. My hydrangea is blooming as well and I was sure we weren't going to get anything because we had a really late frost that nipped all of the buds. Blooming hydrangeas to me mean summer is really here. Sounds like you have kept busy, so glad you are feeling better.
