Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. Did you watch The Oscars? How many of the Best Picture nominees have you seen? (American Sniper, Birdman, Boyhood, Selma, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Imitation Game, The Theory of Everything, and Whiplash)
We rented The Grand Budapest Hotel, but we just couldn’t get into it – at all.  I thought it was just us, but our neighbors tried to watch it and gave up after a while, too.  Hmmmmm  I do want to see several of those movies, but we’ll be waiting until they’re out on DVD.  We’d rather pay $1.50 and pop our own corn than to pay the outrageous prices movie theaters charge for tickets and refreshments.  Plus we can turn on the subtitles so DH can better follow along (we can turn the volume up for him, but even then sometimes the soundtrack overpowers the conversations).

Do you think actors should use their acceptance speeches as an opportunity to promote their political and/or social agenda? Does that sort of speech make you more or less inclined to change the channel?
Oh. My. Word – that’s EXACTLY why I refuse to watch award shows, the Oscars in particular!  And when I read that so many did that this year, I knew we’d made the right choice to watch a movie instead.  I guess I’m showing my age when I say that I can remember when the Oscars were glamorous and entertaining … and while awards shows aren’t my favorite TV programming, I rather enjoyed the Oscars back in the day.  Not any more.  Sad smile Besides, I am not a fan of having someone's political views shoved into my face (even if I agree with their POV), which is why I spent a couple of hours "unfollowing" a few Facebook friends ... I hated having my newsfeed cluttered with their political posts.

2. Speaking of the movies... are you comfortable going to a movie alone? How about dinner in a restaurant (not fast food, but an actual restaurant)? The second half of this question was posed by Carrie who blogs over at It's Not Easy Being Queen. Thanks Carrie!
I wouldn’t be opposed to going to a movie or dining out alone (I’ve done the dining out alone when I’ve traveled on business back before DH and I married, while still working, etc.), but I would prefer not to … while I’m not uncomfortable with my own company, some things are just more enjoyable when done with others … so if I had the choice/opportunity to invite someone to join me, I would.

3. What's the last home repair or home improvement project you had to pay someone to complete? In hindsight was this a project you could have done yourself?
We had a leaky faucet in our bathroom.  My DH is not handy, and thankfully he knows it … so when we’ve had to pay to have a repair made, we’ve not had to pay to have DH’s work undone before the repair can be made.  So whenever we’ve paid someone to take on a project or make a repair, there’s never been any regrets or second thoughts here.

4. Have you ever had Indian food? Like it or no? If you're a fan, what's your favorite dish? Have you ever prepared this yourself at home? Is there an Indian restaurant in your current hometown?
I’ve never had Indian food … I wouldn’t mind trying it (especially if I had a clue what to order), but I doubt if DH would be as interested … he’s not very adventurous when it comes to food.  Winking smile  There are no Indian restaurants in our little town nor any of the other nearby cities (at least not that I know of ... I'll admit that I've not looked).  I’m sure there is at least one over in St. Louis.

5. A song that reminds you of your parents?
Just about anything by any of the “old school” country artists would remind me of them … Marty Robbins, Kitty Wells, Hank Williams, Roy Acuff, Gene Watson, Patsy Cline.

6. The 26th of February is National Tell A Fairy Tale Day. What's your favorite, or one of your favorite fairy tales? Do you have any childhood memories associated with a particular fairy tale?
I confess that I prefer the Disney animated versions of the fairy tales, thanks in no small part to my two granddaughters, especially T#4 who lives all things Disney princess. Diz-a-nee princesses

7. What's a problem you solved yesterday?
Ummm … what to fix for dinner??  Winking smile

8. Insert your own random thought here.
This week has been a quiet, uneventful week … the calm before the storm, so to speak, since the next 2-3 weeks are going to be busy.  I’m taking advantage of this lull to spend plenty of time with my needle and thread.  IMG_1262I took this when I getting ready to move the hoop to the next block.  I’m ready to start quilting the outer blocks on the opposite side of the quilt … I’m 2/3 done with the blocks.

We’ve got more wintery weather coming … a small storm moving through tomorrow morning, a bigger system moving coming Sunday, and freezing rain/ice predicted for next Tuesday.  I won’t mind the snow, but the freezing rain/ice?  No thank you.

I hope that whatever you have planned for today includes a little something that brings you joy! Have a great day!
Kathy

  1. I think we're at the tail end of winter weather. More snow tonight, so I don't think we'll make it back to school this week.
I'm so with you on the whole political views. The only reason I'm on FB now is for my speech stuff. I cringe every time someone I knew in high school sends a friend request.
Love your new background!!! Hope of things to come! :)

  2. What to fix for dinner is our biggest decision most days too! ha :)
Love your hodge podge ... thanks for sharing... I missed out on the Oscars too on purpose as well.. plus it is past my bedtime... did watch Lady Gaga then next morning though.. excellent performance of Sound of Music compilation and lovely to see her with Julie Andrews afterward :) Love your progress on the quilting! You are doing GREAT with that! Overcast but in the 60's here so no complaints weather wise today.. supposed to be a rainy rest of the week here... hope you stay warm and wishing you a full pantry through the cold blast heading your way!

  3. I looked at our temps for next week, and we're in for more of these icy temps. It's just too cold to even go out for a walk and I am craving some Vitamin D. We were in SC over the weekend, and it was cold but we did get out into the sunshine and that helped tremendously. Enjoy your needlework projects : )

  4. I have to solve that same problem most days - what to fix for dinner! Looks like a storm for tonight but our weekend snow has shifted south - looks like you may get it. Sorry! ~Jeanne

  5. I thought The Grand Budapest Hotel was "difficult" in the beginning too - and because I was in a movie theatre I stuck with it. And I am glad I did! It is slapstick, and unusual - but by the end I was thoroughly enjoying it. So, maybe give it another try sometime.

  6. no to the Oscars and other award shows, I find them boring.
I have gone to a movie alone and dinner but I feel uncomfortable doing these by myself so I rarely do and when I have had dinner by myself I bring a book
Hubby does all home repair by himself only thing he doesn't do is the Heat Pump for A/C/heat
When I was a kid in Wisconsin I remember my parents loved Elvis and people in that type of music, later they moved to Arkansas and got into Country which I have never been a fan of so I do not know who they liked.
    No favorite fairy tale
What's for supper is a main problem for me
I don't think I would like Indian food I'm not good with spicy food as I have heart burn problems and it makes it worse.

  7. I'm completely with you on the Oscars.

We missed the predicted snow for here today and instead we have a nasty drizzling rain. Thankfully no ice and hopefully none predicted.

Enjoy your stitching! Think I'll be in the kitchen baking and cooking most of today.

  8. I'm with you on hating to have my Facebook newsfeed clogged with political rants. When have they ever changed anyone's mind? ..... Never that I'm aware of. How often have they annoyed friends. .... Almost every single time!

  10. I agree completely about the oscar acceptance speeches, but it's never an issue because I'm still commuting home during that time. And there is a lot of variety in Indian food, many places will give good recommendations after asking what it is you like. I like a vegetarian dish with cheese called saag paneer. Not the prettiest, but it is tasty!

  11. Hubby and I usually (not always!) stick to the two theaters here that have senior matinee prices of 5 dollars and bring our own snacks (if we even have them). Prices are ridiculous, but I love the big screen. And I've done the same thing with some Facebook friends, and for the same reason. It just gets soo old. Your getting close on the quilt...got to be good feeling. Enjoy your day!

  12. That is exactly why we refuse to watch the award shows too!

Enjoy the calm and stitch on....

  13. Years ago, I enjoyed the Oscars. These days, not so much...
It's good that you have lots of quilting to carry you through these long winter storms. I'm SO ready for spring!

  14. We're supposed to get 2-4" inches of snow later today and I REALLY hope they're wrong! I've had enough of winter and am counting down the days until spring! I, too, much prefer to watch movies in my own home...so much cheaper and way more comfortable, too!

  15. No Oscar watching here and as for going to see one on the big screen sometimes. We have been twice this month and enjoyed both movies. But most of the time we watch the big screen at home. I love Fridays cause we go out, and no wondering what to make for dinner.

  16. We did watch all of The Grand Budapest Hotel, but didn't really like it much. It was strange.
I have been amused at how many people have answered that they don't like going to a movie or eating out by themselves. It has never bothered me. Hmmm...

  17. I agree with you on the awards shows, just seems like a waste of time sometimes. Your quilt is going to be beautiful when you are finished. You are doing such a great job!
