Slooooooow Stitching Sunday

I've decided to join in with the rest of the slow stitchers over at Kathy's Quilts. As a hand quilter, my quilting has always been slower, but now that I've discovered English Paper Piecing and hexagons, even my piecing is slow. ;-)

I haven't accomplished too much exciting this weekend ... some housecleaning in anticipation of family here for a couple of days early next week ... a bigger job than I thought since I've been postponing some of my regular housecleaning ... I justified it by knowing that I would do a thorough cleaning for our guests, but truth be told, I suspect that part of my reasoning was really so I could spend more time working on my hexies ... Ha!

But it hasn't been all work and no play here at Chez Nana ... I have been able to do some stitching on my hexies. I have 11 blocks completed and am almost done with #12 ... I am stitching the outer row of that block and should be able to make some progress this afternoon on #13.  This photo was taken while I was in the middle of block #12 (is it just me or do these blocks look like they're not all the same size?).
I will be using a red for the "path" (the "connector", if you will, surrounding all the blocks). But I will wait to sew them on when I determine the layout (although I'm tempted to stitch the red hexies onto one block just so I can see how it will look). I'm not sure how big this quilt will be. My original plan was to make it a wall quilt, but I'm enjoying this too much to stop ... I suspect that I will make it at least a lap sized quilt. The red and cream star flower quilt (blogged about here and here) will probably be a wall quilt (I have just the spot for it), but I can't guarantee that I will stop when I need to on it either. Working with hexies is just plain addicting!  ;-)

I wish I knew why I procrastinated on hand piecing/English paper piecing ... but better late than never. ;-)

Have a blessed Sunday!

  1. They look wonderful. I guess we should wear dark colors if we want to look smaller as the light ones do look larger.

  2. Oh Kathy I am loving the way these are coming out! Soo pretty. I think I am eventually going to have to give this a whirl too. But I have my nieces new baby to sew for first.

Wishing you and yours a WONDERFUL and blessed Thanksgiving! How I thank God for blogging friends like you who share my heart and passions!

    HUGS! Debbie

  3. Your hexies look great Kathy! I love that layout and you are using some great traditional fabrics. I can't wait to see what happens when you add the red. I love the touch of red that is in a lot of antique quilts. Didn't realize you were blogger!

  4. So so pretty! Red will be the perfect choice for the connectors. Thanks so much for linking up and sharing your project! I'm sure all the blocks are the same size... it's probably just your camera fooling you!

  6. I am in the same boat, I now have two quilts I have not made for grands. Eek!! I have told myself I will get them made before Christmas.
I love your hexagons. I don't think you are slow at all, in fact I am always amazed at how much you get accomplished on your quilts.
I hope you get as much done today as you want too. I wish you could teach me English Paper piecing. It sounds so nice.

  7. That's one thing about company coming, I get my house cleaned!
They do look a little different in size, maybe it's just the camera angle. Have a great time with your company and Happy Thanksgiving.....

  9. Those look great! Isn't it fun how the picture makes them look different sizes? I'd try one with the red to see how it looks - ok, I'm curious so go ahead and work on that red! I think I'll try some hexie's next for hand work...... but think I will try and make a template so that I don't have to cut them down after.

  14. I like your diamond layout. It's fun to see all the different ways everyone in blogland lays out their little hexies. Makes me want to jump on the bandwagon one of these days. I've only made a quilt out of 6 inch hexies!

  15. So many projects and so few hours in the day. Accomplishing some handwork sounds like a good reason to procrastinate on house cleaning. What a fun quilt they will be no matter how big.
