Friday’s Miscellany

Another week is drawing to a close, and it’s been a busy but productive week.

Summer is getting in her last hurrah … we’re getting highs in the 90s again.  But fall is not far away … the days are getting shorter … that fact was hit home when we drove up to our house at 8:30 Wednesday evening and I noticed that our landscaping lights hadn’t turned on yet.  I need to reset the timer.

Here’s my Storm at Sea on my tables, ready to be “sandwiched”:photo-002 … I got it basted and in the hoop last night!!  Woo hoo!  That means I get to start quilting today!  It’s been way too long since I’ve picked up my needle and thread.

We are now 6 days from leaving from Hilton Head … and I can’t wait until I’m here:2010_0506HHITrip0039Do you think that if I pack up now, Thursday will get here any sooner?  ha!

I got a package in the mail yesterday … I just LOVE getting packages in the mail!  In fact, it’s one of the many reasons I enjoy shopping online.  Winking smilephoto (1)It’s a border hoop.  As you may remember, I hand quilt, using a lap hoop … but I’ve had troubles with quilting the outer edges of the quilt.  The batting and backing are cut bigger and fill up my hoop, when I’m working on the edges, but the quilt top does not.  As a result, it’s been a bit of a bother quilting the edges …  I was resigned to the fact that this was just part of quilting with a hoop until I saw a discussion about quilting borders/edges on a Facebook group devoted to hand quilting, and several members recommended a border hoop.

Hope you all have a fabulous Friday!

  2. Storm At Sea is lovely!
I don't hand quilt much anymore, but I use a freestanding hoop when I do. I know there is the option of one of those border hoops and I have thought about it. I'll be interested to see how you like it.

  6. Oh Kathy the storm at sea is soo beautiful! It actually looks as if there is motion in the quilt like a sea...soo pretty! I am totally impressed. I am going to machine quilt my first runner this afternoon. I have NO idea how it is going to go. I sure hope I don't end up ruining the whole thing...kind of scared I am not going to lie. But I am all pinned with star templates traced etc., so we will see. How wonderful to be so close to your trip. It will be here before you know it.

  8. The quilt looks beautiful. Let us know how the hoop works for you. I am still being 'bad' and not using one. I really should throw one on the apple quilt to help me out. No thimble either... I am such a rebel!

  9. Kathy, Just lovely-what a gorgeous quilt! I will be interested to see how you like the new hoop; I have a small oblong one that I use when doing the borders. You leave for H.H. the same day we leave for Ca. We will only be there about six days plus travel time but it should be fun none the less. I miss the beauty of northern Ca. and of course seeing loved ones makes it so much better.
Hope you have a great day and squeeze in some hours to stitch.
    Hugs, Noreen

  12. Wowzers!!! Love your Storm at Sea!!! That quilt will be so fun to quilt with all the movement and bright, uplifting blues :*) It makes me think of the beach - perfect timing to have it ready for quilting at the beach! I'm looking forward to seeing what you think of the new frame - I've heard good things about them.

  13. Your quilt is beautiful. Hilton Head sounds wonderful and such a great time of year to visit. I think getting ready for a trip is almost (I did say almost) as fun as going (will you be doing any quilting while you are gone?)
