Saturday’s Stuff

Several have asked if we were in the path of any of those tornados that ravaged northern Illinois Thursday evening … thankfully no.  We’re further south, and although we had rain and strong winds, we were spared any significant damage in our area.  My sister used to live in one of the areas that was hard hit so it was almost surreal to see and read about the damage Friday morning.

I’ve always been enamored with little mini quilts, and as I’ve working with these little mini pineapple blocks, I’ve realized that little blocks aren’t necessarily any more difficult to make than a “full-sized” block.  Plus, there’s the allure of a project finishing (a little) more quickly … which certainly a great deal of appeal, given how many quilts I want to make and the fact that I'm not sure that I’m going to have time to make them all, certainly not as lap-sized quilts or bigger.  Perhaps I should make more minis … maybe I'd have a better chance of making more of the quilts I want to make?  I've already ordered templates for a 3" winding ways, a 4" bow tie, and a 4" double star as well as Lisa Bongean's new rulers for minis.  Winking smile   In case you haven’t figured it out by now, I’m an “in for a penny, in for a pound” kind of gal.  ha!

I spent Friday with DD and the Ts.  The plan was originally for me to watch the two littles while she took the two bigs on a homeschool group field trip.  But she is suffering from a sinus infection that’s settled into her ears and had to go see the doctor this morning.  So I watched all 4 for a while.  When she got home from the doctor’s office, we went to lunch.  Each year, they study different countries, and part of their study includes learning about each country’s culture (including cuisine).  They’re currently studying Japan, so we went in search of a place that served Japanese food.  We decided to pass on sushi … while the Ts are good eaters and are usually not too picky, we were afraid that an entire meal of sushi might be pushing our luck.  So we chose soba noodles with chicken and teriyaki sauce.  Everyone enjoyed their lunch … except for T#4, who for some reason (maybe because she’s finally decided to revisit the “terrible twos” – never mind the fact that she’s 5 Eye rolling smile) decided that she didn’t want to try hers … not even one bite.

It looks like there’ll be a sports marathon at Chez Nana this afternoon … the Cardinals play at noon and the Blues finish up the regular season at 2:00.  You all surely don’t have to guess what I’ll be doing while we’re watching the games?  Winking smile  My hoop has been sitting ignored for 4 days now … I should be able to get in a good bit of hand quilting this weekend (although it is going to be awfully nice tomorrow …).

Last night (actually very early this morning) I completed the last miniature pineapple block and even finished the fun part” of removing the papers (there are some advantages to having insomnia).  Next up will be sewing the blocks together.  I hope that I’ll be able to tell then if I want/need to add a border … and if I do, I’ll start auditioning fabrics.

I hope that whatever you have planned for today includes a little something that brings you joy ... have a great day!
Kathy

  1. my plan today is to spend at least part of the day with a heat wrap around my shoulders and possibly getting a massage early in the week - 3 days of yard work has made my shoulders and neck act up - can't win. I do not make mini's I guess I wouldn't know what to do with them when they were done although I have seen some wall display's that are nice and have a grouping of 10 more on a wall

  6. Have a lovely Saturday. I have always been intrigued with mini quilts too. I hope your daughter gets well soon, it is no fun being sick and being a Mom and trying to home school.
So glad all of you and yours were safe. My sister lives in the in Oklahoma and I just cringe inside when those tornadoes start.
I am so sorry you are experiencing insomnia. Good for quilting though.

I laughed at your reference to "in for a penny, in for a pound." Oh, can I relate to that. : )
