Slow Stitching Weekend

It’s been a slow stitching week here at Chez Nana, and it looks like it’s going to be a slow stitching weekend, as well.  Since I do love to hand quilt, I’m not complaining.

I finished up block #12 yesterday and am almost done with block #13.  There are 18 blocks in my Labor Day Stars quilt, so it won’t be too long before I’ll be able to start quilting on the setting triangles.  Here’s a photo I took early yesterday morning as I was quilting sashings on block #13.  IMG_0270While I’ve been quilting, I have been listening to audiobooks.  I “read” John Grisham’s latest book … not a fan of that one (nor of his previous new release either).  I’m trying to get through Camel Club by David Baldacci … it’s ok, but it really isn’t grabbing me.  I’m waiting on some new releases by some other authors who I’ve enjoyed … their works are what a former co-worker would call “potato chips for the mind” which make them perfect for “reading” while quilting.  Because I’m in a bit of a reading lull, I decided to get caught up on NICS.  I watched, live, a small handful of last season’s episodes but let the subsequent episodes “pile up” on our DVR.  I’m down to the last 2 episodes from last season and then all of this season’s episodes.  I wonder if I’ll get caught up this weekend?

Earlier this week, I ordered some fabrics from Homestead Hearth … online rather than making the trip to their brick and mortar store.  For my next EPP project, I’d like to make a Patchwork of the Crosses.  I’ve collected the papers and am now collecting some fabrics that would be suitable for fussy cutting.  I don’t trust my fussy cutting skills (who am I kidding … I have no fussy cutting skills! ha!), so I’m going to start with stripes.  I picked up some striped fabrics (also half price) when we stopped at Hancock’s of Paducah on our way to Hilton Head in September, and when I saw that Homestead Hearth had some half price, I had to add to my collection.  The fabrics came yesterday … it’s amazing how a squishy package in the mail can brighten one’s day.  Winking smile  IMG_0272Since I want to finish my already-in-progress EPP projects (my Martha Washington’s Flower Garden and my bow tie quilt), it’s liable to be a while before I start cutting into these fabrics … but at least I’ll be prepared (I had no striped or border fabrics in my stash) … and by buying when on sale, I won’t have wreaked havoc on my fabric acquisition budget.  Winking smile

I saw these on Facebook this morning and couldn’t resist sharing them … hope they make you giggle a little like they did me.

  1. I think you will enjoy POTC - I loved it and it is one of my favorite scrappy quilts that I have made.
I didn't like David Baldacci's Camel Club series at all - I just couldn't get into those characters and I normally love his books. If you read Michael Connelly he has a new book out. John Grisham's - I used to love his books but then it seemed like he just kept repeating his story line - I haven't read the newest book but his character seems to be based on Michael Connelly's character -Michael Haller and he has been his character for years driving around in his car for his office!

  2. Have you tried any quilting mysteries? Clair O'Donahue, Arlene Sargentino have a couple of good ones. There is another author too, but can't think of her name. I can't believe you have that much done already! I really need to start watching NCIS from this season.....

  3. Very pretty new fabric! I envy you listening to books while quilting. I tune out things so I'm always having to "rewind" to figure out what is going on. So I listen to a radio or watch TV. This cooler weather really makes one want to stay inside and stitch. ~Jeanne

  6. Yes I agree, getting squishy packages in the mail! I laughed about that last picture. That is so great. Your quilt is lovely. I was wondering about those last John Grishams. You know it seems to me it was hard to get into the Camel Club, but I ended up being glad I stuck with it.
    Have a lovely weekend

Those stripes appear to be great choices for fussy-cutting.
Those last two photos had me laughing. Thanks for that! : )

  10. Your Labor day quilt is beautiful, the little cartoons were cute, I'm convinced the missing socks do turn up as extra tupperware lids, I have a cupboard full to prove it. Hope you are enjoying your weekend.

  11. The Labor Day Stars will be a lovely quilt--really nice. Your striped fabrics for EPP of the Crosses will really be pretty in those colors. I have a book about them, but so far, just reading. I haven't done any EPP lately...kind of put it away for a bit to simmer....hugs, enjoy julierose

  17. I found a match to a sock that has been on top of my dryer for three weeks. Not sure where it has been hiding but it put a big smile on my face. Your making great progress!

  20. Yes, the star block is lovely for sure and I still am in awe of all your quilting ladies. Looks just way to detail for me and my eyes. Tupperware lids, isn't that the truth and not sure how it even happens. Happy new week!

  21. Happy Monday dear friend, loved seeing your progress on the star. I had hoped to quilt today but caught up with other errands and never made it downstairs. We are supposed to get hit with snow on Wednesday and a possible blizzard, so plan on seeing then. How are you feeling?
    With love and prayers,

  22. Your Labor Day Stars is going to be spectacular! I adore hand quilting -- especially when it's on a piece I'm really in love with. The sock vs. tupperware lids conundrum has got to be true!!! :)

  23. It seems like you are making good speed on your Labor Day Stars, Kathy! I can't wait to see what you do with those stripes. And thanks for the funnies at the end. They have me a chuckle before bed.

  24. I'm so sorry it's taken me this long to come over and visit. With Ed somewhat 'out of commission", my chores have increased. I guess it's payback for all of those weeks he did my chores when my back was "out".
I love your quilt, and the fabrics you chose :)
I really should try some audio books, perhaps at night when I can't sleep!
Thanks for sharing the little "funnies" at the end of your post. That's so true about socks and tupperware lids!!!

  25. I've been listening to audio books too. My latest finish was go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee. I'm expecting a squishy package in a few days too!
