Survey Time!

I DID finish the signature quilt yesterday afternoon.  Woo hoo!

Except now I'm feeling like this quilt needs borders?  Isn't it funny how what we envision in our minds doesn't always look as good as it did in our minds?  Or is that just me?  ;-)

My first thought was a narrow inner border in the cheddar with a wider outer border in black. I auditioned those fabrics, and I wasn't pleased with how it looked with the sashing and cornerstones on the outer edges.  So my next thought was to remove those outer sashes and cornerstones and add the borders. I really don't want to do all that frog stitching, but I'm feeling like the quilt is calling for the borders.  Here is the audition (although I'm thinking of a 5" outer border instead of 3"?).

And that's where you all come in ... I would like your opinions.  Leave the quilt as is or add borders?

Thanks, everyone, for your advice!  ;-)

hope that whatever you have planned for today includes a little something that brings you joy ... have a great day!
Kathy

  1. I wonder how it would look by adding a 3 inch border in the black fabric only.

  2. do you know what the quilt will be used for and how large is it as it is now? I think a sashing type border as you show would be nice - 3 inches.

  4. I didn't think it needed a border ... until I saw it with the border... & now I like it with - but I think its beautiful without too :)

  5. I like it better with the borders. It just brings everything together. It looks great, btw! :0)

  6. I love the black sashing with the cheddar cornerstones. Please don't lost those on the outside. How would it look with that grey/blue as a border next to the sashing with the cheddar as your wider outside border? Just a thought. So many choices!

  7. I usually think that borders don't look "right" on repro style quilts, but I do like this one a lot with the borders!

  8. I think whatever makes you smile when you see it is what you should choose.

  9. Great quilt my friend! You are amazing. I like the blue border better and think a 5" border would work better for quilting. I'm trying to get one new block made per day(at least) for the online sew-along. Have to say I'm not doing the appliqué or embroidery blocks though, because I don't want them to be in a quilt. Hope you are having a great dat; btw-I'm on the last 1 1/2 borders of our quilt, can't wait til it's done!

  10. Nice quilt! I like the idea of leaving the sashings and cornerstones and adding the 3" black border. Has anyone mentioned how nice it is to see your posts on a rather regular basis again?! So nice to have you feeling better! ~Jeanne

  11. This is so gorgeous! What if you add just the black border and then use the cheddar for the binding?

  12. I don't know..think I'd leave the edge sashing/cornerstones on. Looks better to me. But hey, it's your quilt..make it like YOU like it. I made one very similar years ago.

  13. I was going to vote on no border until I saw the border on it. Either way would be great.

  14. Oh goodness I think the possibilities are endless on what might look good on this quilt....I LOVE the blocks. I guess I will just throw on my opinion at this point. I think I might be tempted to leave it how it was with the black sashing with the mustard cornerstones, and then add on a 5 inch border in any of the other fabrics [blue, green, red just any of them] and then use the mustard as the binding. I'LL be so curious to see which way you go. No matter what you may chose I know it's going to look fantastic. The blocks are soo good!

  15. I prefer to leave sashings around the outer edge, but you do what calls to you. If it was my quilt I might audition a narrow red inner border from one of the reds in the quilt, with sashings intact, and then the black outer border. Just me thinking out loud. : )

  16. I was thinking like Janet, leaving the sashing strips and adding a different color inner border and then the outside border. Now it's time for you to do what you like :0)

  17. It's been two weeks since you posted this, Kathy, and you've probably already made a decision, but I'm chiming in anyway. First, this is just a gorgeous quilt. I've been wanting to make these blocks for a long time. What size are they?

As far as sashing and border: to my eye quilts look incomplete when the sashing ends at the border or edge of the quilt. I love you sashing and cornerstones all the way around the edges. And the wider border (is it black or dark blue) looks great. But that's just me. You need to decide what you think you'll like when it's finished.

This is always a hard part for me, deciding the next/final steps when it comes to sashing, cornerstones, and borders. (And it's so easy to see in others' quilts, too. Probably because I can be at least a little objective.) I'm also learning that there's usually not just one that's great, but at least several options work well for every quilt. (I'm a slow learner.)

I hope you had a great day.
