Wednesday Hodgepodge

It’s Wednesday again … and I remembered again (maybe because I’m counting the days down until Saturday? ha!).  As we all know, if it’s Wednesday, it’s time for Hodgepodge!  And as always, after you’ve read (and commented?) on my answers, you can always go check out everyone else’s answers at Joyce’s.

1. What do you do at the first sign of a cold? Will you get a flu shot this year?

At the first sign of a cold, I buy a big old box of Puffs Plus.  I get a flu shot every year.  The last couple of years, my annual check up has been in the fall, so I’ve gotten one at the doctor’s office.  But in previous years, the University where I worked would give flu shots to staff at no charge – upon presentation of our health insurance card.  And we could go over during working hours, so there never was a reason not to get one.

2. What advice can you give about how to conquer fear?

Pray.  I have to tell you that I’m definitely a work in progress, so I’m probably not one you’d want to go to for advice.  ;-)

3. Share two good things about your life right now.

Just two?  ;-)  Seriously, my sweet DH … since I’ve gone back to work part-time, he’s really been picking up the slack around the house.  And my DD … I’m blessed to have a daughter who’s also my best friend.

4. A hot fall fashion trend in 2011 is a return to sixties style...tunics with pants, shift dresses, pencil skirts, cinched waists, bold prints, high necklines and short lengths to name a few. How does this fashion trend fit with your wardrobe and personal sense of style?

My wardrobe and personal sense of style lean towards the classic, timeless look.

5. Were you involved in scouting as a kid? How about as an adult?

I was a Brownie for 1 year, and that was my only involvement in scouting.

6. Apple, pear, plum, pumpkin...your favorite fall flavor?

Apple.  It’s just so versatile.  I love apple pie, caramel apples, apple crisp, apple slices, apple cake, baked apples.  It doesn’t hurt that there is an abundance of apple orchards about an hour to the north … and that the drive there is a beautiful one in the fall, along the river with the trees on the bluff turning their vivid colors.  DH and I try to make the drive up there every fall.

7. What characteristics do you think are essential in a good teacher?

Patience … which is the reason my teaching career plans didn’t get very far off the ground.  When I first went to college right out of high school, I wanted to be a history teacher.  I took a couple of history courses (which I thoroughly enjoyed) before dropping out to marry my ex.  When I returned to college upon our divorce, I knew myself well enough to know that I didn’t have the patience to be a good teacher.  So I became an accountant instead.  ;-)

8. Insert your own random thought here.

We got a half inch of rain overnight … and it’s still raining and supposed to rain most all day.  And the 90-degree temperatures are gone (for good, I hope).

  1. Rain has not been in short supply around here! We are also in apple orchard territory. I love it...the orchards are beautiful, the scenery, the way the air smells this time of year...I love fall!

  2. We are just starting to get rain here - just when the farmers are wanting to get the corn out. The ground is SO dry it hasn't been a problem yet. Hope it stays that way.

  3. I've never seen an apple orchard, but I'd love to! As for rain, we desperately need some!

My daughter is also my best friend. I love her dearly, and don't know what I'd do without her.

  4. Good morning! It is somewhat raining here too, but the temps are still HIGH...I can't wait till it cools off for good. I am glad I don't have to be concerned about the current Fall fashions anymore, because I'd be in trouble with that list, haha. My daughter is one of my closes friends as well. Nothing better is there? Have a wonderful day! HUGS

  5. It is so neat to have a great relationship with your DD and to have a hubby that helps out around the house! That is great to get the rain too! I'm sure as long as it is not causing flooding, it is always appreciated! I agree with your reasoning about getting a flu shot, if you can get it done for free where you work, go for it. I usually get one, didn't get one last year for some reason, thankfully didn't get the flu, but its on the agenda for this year. When I think I'm coming down with a cold, I start taking lots of vitamin C, if I catch it quick enough, I can knock the cold way back by doing that.

I agree, so many wonderful things to do with apples!! Very versatile indeed!

    enjoy Wednesday!

  6. Your blog is the closest I've been to rain in a long, long time!

I started college to be a teacher - and found out pretty quickly that I'm not really into kids ;-) Almost didn't have any myself 'cause I didn't realize how much differently you feel about your own.

  7. Don't really care to eat apples but love the smell of them. Would love to walk through and orchard and pick some.
Can't remember the last time we have had rain. It's been 90 and above for over 120 days here.

  8. We have apple orchards around here too and I love them in the fall.

We're having rain today too and it's getting cooler again. I think we'll have the windows open tonight. Yay!

    Great answers.

  9. Sounds like you and I could do some major damage on an apple orchard. I think your rain is heading my way. Tomorrow's temps are supposed to be 15 degrees cooler than today.

  10. I love apples too but pumpkin took first on this one! And someone has a recipe for pumpkin chili that I can't wait to try!

We had rain today- and I hope our 90 degree temps are gone too. And the 80s can go with them! LOL

  11. Good for you for realizing that you didn't have the patience required to be a teacher! I wish that other people would realize that before they actually become one :/

  13. It is a blessing to have a daughter as a friend.
My daughter and I are that way too! So true, you can do so much with apples! We have humidity which is not normal for us. Lots of storms each day around the mountains.

  14. Hey Kathy - so glad you finally got some rain!

And...how wonderful that your DH picks up the slack around the house.

I don't have any daughters, but my wonderful D-I-L's are great friends to me!

    Have a wonderful weekend!
