Wednesday Hodgepodge

Can you believe it – another Wednesday is here.  What’s even more unbelievable is that after today, there are only 3 more Hodgepodges in 2012!!!

1.  Share your traditions surrounding the Christmas stocking.
I have to say that when DD was little, she didn’t have a Christmas stocking.  Sad smile  I’ll blame it on the fact that I wasn’t creative enough to find a suitable alternative to a fireplace.  It wasn’t until when DH and I married that we finally had a house with a fireplace, so I stitched stockings for the 3 of us.  When DD married, I added a stocking for DSIL.  When the littles came, DD picked out stocking patterns for each of them.  But the stockings I made were fairly small and don’t hold enough loot.  So DD hangs larger stockings on their fireplace.  Winking smile

2.  How many hours of sleep do you average at night?  Is it enough?
I average about 8 hours of sleep, and it seems to be enough.  10 years ago, I would have said that it wouldn’t be enough, but I don’t know if it’s because I need less sleep now that I’m older or if it’s because I’m sleeping better now that I’m retired, sleeping until I’m ready to get up.

3.  If you had to give up one thing for the remainder of this year what would it be?
I’m not sure … I mean I suppose that I could give up just about anything for 26 days if I had to.  I suspect that everyone else has come up with something quite profound and that my answer will seem so lame.  ha!

4.  The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (or Wills and Kate as I like to call them) have announced they're expecting a baby. Do you follow news of the Royals?
No, I don’t.

5.  For me,  the sound of childhood is__________________.
The sound of a wooden screen door slamming shut. It reminds me of my childhood ... running in and out of the house during the day.

6.  Fruit cake-yay or boo? What's your favorite dessert made with fruit?
Not a fan.  But most of the ones I’ve tried have been too dry, and I just do not care for dry cakes or bread.  I’m also not a fan of most dried fruit.

If you’re asking about dessert made with any kind of fruit (fresh, canned or dried), I’d have to say that my favorite would be a blackberry cobbler.  But I do like apple crisp – a lot.

7. What is one thing you want to accomplish before 2012 comes to an end?
I’d like to finish that I Spy quilt before Christmas.  Again I suspect that everyone else is going to come up with something profound and that my answer will seem so superficial.  But it’s the only thing I can think of, so I’m going with it.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.
I ended up going to DD’s yesterday.  A good friend of hers is just about at the end of her battle with breast cancer and wanted to do some Christmas shopping.  DD took her, to help make this last Christmas season a special one.  I’d gotten a good night’s sleep and was feeling better so I had a good day with my Ts.  But I did start to feel pretty droopy as DH and I were cleaning up after dinner, so I had a quiet evening with an early bedtime.  Today will be another day with DD and my Ts.  We’re just going to spend the day together – nothing fancy or special, just some time together.  Red heart

  1. Blackberry cobbler is the best. I like the slamming screen door - didn't think of that but it brought back a lot of memories when I read it.

  2. Apparently you and I are among the few who don't follow the Royals :)

You're so blessed to be able to sleep 8 hours! I can only do that with the help of a sleep aid.

    Enjoy your family day.

  4. I like to get 8 hours but I don't sleep all that well most of the time.

I make homemade fruitcake and soak it in rum so it is never dry. I have some friends that like it and just as many that don't. ;-)

  5. So sorry to hear about your daughter's friend...I can't even imagine how much it meant to her to go Christmas shopping. Two of my friends were just diagnosed with breast cancer...seems to be happening more often these days. Praying for her and her family. Blackberry cobbler with a big blob of vanilla ice cream...perfection!

  6. good morning! I don't follow the royals either. ; ) And I have a feeling had I done this hodgepodge I would have been like you and thinking others would come up with profound and significant answers to a couple of these, but my answers would have been more like yours lol. I do tend to over-think them sometimes. Hope you enjoy your day!

  7. We've had fireplaces in the past but no longer do. I bought a mitten drying stand in Lancaster Co. several years ago and it's been working pretty well for stockings, too. :)

  9. We've never had a fireplace, but have always just hung the stockings anyway on pegs on the wall.

Hope you're feeling well today and having fun with your DD and Ts.

  10. Yes those wooden screen doors are definitely a reminder of children playing outside. I am so sorry about DD's friend. It brought tears to my eyes. How sweet of her to take her shopping. ((HUGS))

  12. Just dropping by to say Hi.
I've been out of sorts with blogging lately.
What a great friend you have to take the other dear friend of her's out shopping making it special. So sweet.
    Hope you are well.

  14. I enjoyed all of your answers today. I am glad you are feeling better.
I had to laugh about your stockings. I still need to go get some material to make Nik's.
I had to baby sit today because my DIL had to run to the doctor so of course, I am totally wiped out. I wonder why that is? :)
    Well rest if you can.

  15. Ah, but time together IS special no matter what you do! If I went with your line on #5, I have to say mother yelling at us to NOT slam the door...I think that was louder than the door slam itself. LOL

  16. Your daughter is kind to help her friend and you are kind to help her! Hope you feel well soon!

  17. It is always so interesting to see the various answers to each week's questions.

Oh,my precious friend is losing her battle as well. She is back in the hospital now and is in and out all the time. It is so, so sad!

I can't wait to have some time with our daughter next week. Blessings!

  18. You are lucky to get 8 hours of sleep. I think that is the perfect number. I get 7, but I would love 8. If I could do what I wanted I would go to sleep at 12 and wake up at 8.

    Loved your sharing.

  20. I agree with on on the dried out cakes and bread. My mom's must not be too dry for me to like it. :)
Your goal to finish the quilt is great! My goal, you know, is to read a book!

  21. That was sweet of your daughter to spend the time with her friend; what a sad but special time! How sweet with the stockings! My mom would do the same; she started making stockings for all of us and then when we got married, our spouses, then the kids, etc. Very special stockings indeed.

  22. I love the idea you shared, and the memory...of the door slamming as you went in and out the door as in your childhood. Having a friend like your daughter to help with the Christmas Shopping is so great. Your daughter will be rewarded some day for her generous soul. Y'know, I have never had cobbler, but I DO love apple crisp.

  23. Kathy-I enjoyed your random thoughts. I feel like I know you a little bit better now. Please tell your daughter that I prayed for her sweet friend this morning and for your daughter as she ministers to her. We just never know what others are going through. Hugs!

  24. What a nice thing to do to help out a friend on what be her last Christmas. It makes the season a bit bitter-sweet doesn't it. I'm so sorry that she is going through this. May you have a blessed Christmas.
