Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. As August draws to a close, share what's been your favorite weekend of the entire summer?

That’s a toughie … I guess, if I have to choose one weekend (assuming I can even remember each and every weekend of the summer), it’d be the first weekend in August, when on Saturday T#1 finished 2nd overall at the summer swim regional championships and on Sunday we celebrated T#3’s birthday (with plenty of time spent with #2 and #4).2nd place

2. Labor Day is marked in the US of A on Monday, September 1st.  What paying job have you held that you've loved the most? Liked the least?

My least favorite job was waitressing … I waitressed for 2 years as I was putting myself through university prior to my first marriage.  In a bit of hyperbole, I always swore that I’d rather go on welfare than ever waitress again.  I certainly do have a lot of respect for the wait staff when we dine out and encourage DH to be generous when we’ve had good service.

My most favorite job was the last job I held prior to my retirement.  I was an accountant at the University, in the Administrative Accounting department.  I enjoyed being an accountant, but most of all I enjoyed the atmosphere and camaraderie … making the decision to retire was a very difficult one (but not one that I’ve ever regretted).

3. Does the new school year start before or after Labor Day where you live? When do you think it should begin? There is much discussion now about older students having later start times to their school day...your thoughts?

It seems that every school district in these parts starts classes around mid-August.  That just seems early to me.  Back in the dark ages, when I was in school, we didn’t start until after Labor Day and ended the school year ‘round about the same time that the school year ends now.  Do the kids now get more days off?  What’s the deal?

I heard the news reports that a leading group of pediatricians believes that for teens, their school day ought to start later.  I’m not sure that it’s going to accomplish what the doctors are hoping it will.  There are still only 24 hours in a day, and between school, homework, extracurricular activities, social activities, family activities, there isn’t much time for sleep.  If teens start the school day later, they’ll finish it later, and they’ll stay up later finishing up homework after all the other activities in their days.

4. What's something you've worked at recently that could be deemed a 'labor of love'?

Now THIS is an easy question for me!  Open-mouthed smile  Working at the spiral log cabin quilt (or the chevron quilt or any of the quilts I make) is definitely a labor of love!

5.Which of the following work idioms can you most relate to right now...'A woman's work is never done.', 'All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.' 'Many hands make light work.'

I’m not sure that right now I can relate to any of the three.  Although I’m going to draft DH to help me clean and prepare for our guests coming this weekend … so “many hands make light work” is probably most apropos.

6. Crab or lobster or thanks, but no thanks? Favorite way to have your choice prepared?

Oh yes indeed!  And if I have to choose just one, I guess I’ll choose crab.  I do love me some crab!  I’ve had a hankering for some time for a soft shell crab sandwich, but I’ll take crab served just about any way … except crab legs.  Winking smile

7. Albert Einstein is quoted as saying, 'Three rules of work: Out of clutter find simplicity; From discord find harmony; In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.' Which of the three do you consider to be the most important? Share one of your own 'rules of work'.

My rule is “a place for everything, and everything in its place.”  Clutter and chaos make me crazy.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

T#1

T#1 had science experiments to do for school.  The instructions for one experiment advised wearing protective eyewear. “Protective eyewear?  Seriously?  Is this experiment going to result in a nuclear explosion?  His mama responded that he needed to follow the instructions, to which T#1 responded “I know … I’ve got it covered.  You know … it’d be nice if they wanted me to see.”

On a semi-related note, I want to know who told him he could grow up?

I hope that whatever you have planned today includes a little something that brings you joy.  Have a wonderful Wednesday!

Kathy

  1. Waitressing is a job I have never wanted to hold. My sister was a waitress for several years and I knew how hard she worked. For that reason I have always had great respect for the wait staff. Now my daughter is a waitress at Buffalo Wild Wings. She loves it and she makes pretty awesome tips. It's what has allowed her to move into an apartment (in Florida) with her girlfriends as she prepares to go back to school to get her Masters sometime next year.

Hope you get some stitching time in today. Have a great day!

  2. I agree, being a waitress is hard work! (Like I said, I lasted 2 days)

Our school system takes lots of breaks and holidays that we didn't get as children. It's one reason they start back so soon.

I agree with you, the 'grands' are growing up too fast. Sigh. I loved the "I've got it covered" comment :)

  3. I had not heard about the starting the school later thing but in reading around this morning my thoughts are similar to yours...AND then what? Like somehow that's going to make more hours in the day? There is still all the same things to do...And in the real world (which is just a few short years away from them) nothing works like that. Not that you shouldn't be young while you are young, but you know what I mean. Oh and I know what you mean about some of those grands seeming grown up suddenly. I have a few that fall into that category, and it's a neat thing. Love it! Have a good day Kathy. Not going to get to any sewing today as I have a couple of appointments today. And my sister comes tomorrow so I am looking at Friday before I get back to it...time just goes to fast...

  4. I, like you, have to say that "clutter and chaos make me crazy." I'm so glad I'm not alone with that. And may the Lord help those who can accomplish ANYTHING when they are in the midst of all that! I enjoyed your blog. I quilt, too. Have a good Labor Day weekend.

  7. I still believe school should start after Labor Day the official end of summer in my book! Yes your quilts are definitely labors of love. I like your rule and I think because of my very organized clutter I am crazy! Have to get it out of here.

  8. I love soft shell crab too, but you have to be in the right place to get them as the season is short. Sounds like you've had some fun memories made with you T's this summer : )

  10. Oh, I'm a "everything in it's place" kind of gal too. I have to have order and organization.

Yes, you do labors of love all the time for sure. Quilting is definitely a labor of love.

    Happy mid-week!

  11. I broke out in shingles when it came to making the retirement decision. Totally agree with you on kids starting school later. Are school schedules being accommodated around social media distractions? Will future employers adjust their start times? Enjoy your company.

  12. I loved your answers to the hodge-lodge questions! I waitresses for a number if years and also cooked at a restaurant. I would much rather waitress! My DIL is an accountant at UAF and loves her job. Where has Summer gone!

  13. Hi Kathy! I'm a Nana too, and I love spending time with my little ones. (They are much younger than your T's!)
I'm not much for crab or lobster, but I do like shrimp!
I feel sad for all the children back in school now that the weather has decided to be beastly. Ugh! I hope there's some relief from the heat soon.

    Enjoy your guests this weekend!

  15. I was waitressing at a local steak restaurant where I met my current husband 20 years ago. It was a second job in the evenings - my day job was as a Marketing Specialist at a desk all day. As a single mom of two growing kids, I struggled to make ends meet. The year both my home's Heat Pump and the Heater Core on my car went out, I couldn't even begin to afford those things - so I a second job was imperative. I actually enjoyed the work at the restaurant because it was so different from my day job - meeting new people and being active. So even though it was supposed to be just for the summer until I paid off those expenses, I ended up waitressing at night for 4 years!
