Wednesday Hodgepodge

I'm actually going to be able to participate in this week's Hodgepodge! Usually when we're on vacation, there's barely enough time to get in a post or two ... but with rain forecast all day Tuesday and with my legs feeling the effect of walking two hours out on the beach Sunday and Monday, I decided to use that extra indoor time Tuesday to post/schedule a Wednesday Hodgepodge post! ;-)

1. It's fall. Y'all. My favorite season of the year! What's something you love to do this time of year that makes you feel it's officially fall? And unrelated to that, do you ever say-'y'all'?

When the calendar says that it's fall, it's time to do a little fall decorating. I don't go overboard with my seasonal decorating (less is more for so many things in my little world), but one of the things I always do is go to the nearby nursery and pick up some potted mums ... nothing says fall like some gorgeous mums.

And yes, I like to say "y'all" ... I am from the south, you know ... southern Illinois, that is!

2. When did you last have a falling out with someone? Has it been resolved?

My best friend and I had a falling out several years back. To this day, I'm not sure why ... I'm not one to force myself on someone else - to a fault.  :-(

It's hard for me to develop very close friends ... like I said, I'm not one to force myself on someone else, so I know that and a heavy dosage of introversion impede the development of very close friendships.

3. A song you love with the word 'fall' in it's title?

I expect you meant "fall" as in "autumn", but I'm going to go with the first song that came to mind with the word "fall" (regardless of meaning) ... "I Fall to Pieces" by Patsy Cline.

4. What's something you've recently let 'fall by the wayside?'

I guess that would be my Storm at Sea quilt. I let it "fall by the wayside" when I started to work on DD's chevron quilt (http://nanato4ts.blogspot.com/2014/03/finally-some-slow-sunday-stitching.html), and that's where it remains. I do plan to finish it some day, but some unhappiness with how the blocks came together (there were so many seams in the blocks ... all that bulk played havoc with the points when sewing the blocks together), some unhappiness with the quilting thread I was using (knotting and tangling - big time!) and an unexplained inability to get my stitches small enough to suit me has robbed my joy in making that quilt. So I've let it sit while I'm working on projects I'm enjoying much more ... T#1's spiral log cabin and DH's log cabin.

5. When did you last attend an event, read a book, watch a movie, try a new recipe, or visit a shop-town-tourist attraction that fell short of your expectations? In what way?

There's a steakhouse here in Hilton Head that serves a fish dish that DH and I absolutely loved! So much so that that's where we had our first dinner on the island ... but alas, the meal fell waaaay short of our expectations. The chef tweaked the recipe, and while the dish was good, it wasn't great like it was before the changes. We were so disappointed.

6. Describe a time you said or thought, 'The apple doesn't fall far from the tree."

I think that every time I see T#4's mannerisms, "OCD-ness", facial expressions ... she's her Mama's "mini-me". Which means that she's also her Nana's "mini-me". ;-)

7. Was today better than yesterday? Why or why not?

Since I'm writing this on Tuesday, I'd have to say that today probably isn't going to be better than yesterday. Monday was an absolutely gorgeous day here on the island ... sunny and warm and perfect for time out on the beach (hence the two-plus hour walk). Today is going to be cool and cloudy with an 80% chance for rain all day. But DH and I always say that a rainy day at the beach is a better day than a sunny day at home (that may be a bit of a stretch ... we used to say that a rainy day at the beach is better than a nice day in the office ... when we were still working ... this was the best revision we could come up with - ha!).

8. Insert your own random thought here.

We're down to our last 4-1/2 days here on the island ... talk about bitter sweet ... I do not want to leave our little slice of paradise on earth, but I'm missing DD and the Ts so, so much!

I hope that whatever you have planned for today includes a little something that brings you joy! Have a great day!
Kathy

  1. Don't let a little rain spoil your vacay, Kathy. I mean, you're at the beach...what better place to be, right? ENJOY! It's never easy to have a falling out with a friend, especially when there was no real resolution. Wishing you safe travels as you head home in a few days!

  3. I'm sorry the weather didn't cooperate, but I'm happy that you had a chance to participate in the Hodgepodge from HH.

I could have answered #6 the same way you did. My daughter and granddaughter are mini clones of me.

Enjoy the rest of your vacation :) A bad day at the beach still beats a good day anywhere else!

  4. I'm sorry for the mystery with your friend. These things are always hard to understand, and oftentimes it's not anything to do with us. I agree with you on the mums-nothing says fall like mums on the patio! Enjoy the rest of your holiday and safe travels home!

  5. Enjoy the rest of your vacation!

I love mums too, they're like natures finally splash of color before everything gets drab and gray.

  7. I used to get pots and pots of mum's in the Fall. I LOVE them. Haven't gotten any since we moved here...think I am going to change that! I am sorry to hear about your friend. I hate things like that. It has happened to me twice. One of the gals and I were soo close and she just couldn't handle all the changes in my life and quit responding and participating in the relationship. We revived it (some) years later and she finally told me what her issues had been. I found it bewildering, and still do to an extent. And the other gal and I weren't nearly as close but the friendship just dwindled. Sad... It makes me grateful my best friends have always been my sisters. They have seen me through all life's best and worst of moments. I also know what you mean about a project that just doesn't bring you pleasure anymore. There are sooo many that do, WHY not move on right? lol Enjoy your day Kathy! You have had such a nice, long wonderous vacation! Soo glad you got this time!

  10. Sorry you are so close to the end of your trip - it always goes by too fast! Relationships are so strange - falling out with a best friend has happened here too and I also never got a reason. But life goes on and life is good! Have a safe trip home. ~Jeanne

  11. Hi! It's been ages since we've visited each other....I always assumed you went to Facebook and no longer did blogs. But I saw your comment on April's Hodgepodge and wanted to stop by.

Enjoy the last few days of paradise.

  12. I am not good at making friends and really barely try any more, in the past at different times I had two good friends and both died, after the first one did, it took awhile but I made another good friend when that one died too I just kind of gave up trying. In years past long long time ago I had a good friend and we moved away and she just didn't even try to stay in touch and I though we had a good friendship I guess it wasn't as strong as I had thought it was.
I say y'all too and I grew up in Arkansas but live in Arkansas for the past 34 years now and it has rubbed off on me

  17. I hope it is one day of rain! I am sorry about the situation with your friend. I would say it must be something on her part, so don't carry this burden on your heart.
