Catching Up … Again

It seems like all I do any more is catch up …  here and in real life.  Winking smile

Monday, DH and I took our road trip.  I loved the quilt shop!  There were so many fabrics … sensory overload.  I’m going to need to go back again … maybe I’ll be better able to take it all in.  I did my best not to go overboard and come home with half the shop (ha!) … I found a square ruler that is the perfect size for squaring up the log cabin blocks I’m making for T#3 … I had a 6” square ruler and an 18” square ruler (why??? I think I must have thought that an 18" square ruler would be a “one-size-fits-all” solution to square rulers but truthfully, it’s just too big – too unwieldy).  And of course, I bought fabric.IMG_1106That evening, I decided to organize my fabric “collection” before putting away my new fabric.  Late last summer, I finally decided to take over the closet in the bedroom where I sew … we had shelves installed and purchased small tubs for my fabrics.  I chose to sort by color and just tossed my fabrics into the appropriate tub.  Of course, if I tried to find something, I had to dump out the fabric, root through it, and then toss it all back into the tub.  Not very efficient or effective.  I knew that I needed to organize my fabric in those tubs, but I wanted to stitch instead of organize.  I finally bit the bullet and organized … much better now.  But in going through my fabrics, I discovered that I’ve purchased 3 pieces of the same fabric over the last year or so.  See the third fabric from the bottom up … the neutral with a striped design?  I now have 3 pieces of that fabric … thankfully, they’re all in different shades of neutral … the piece I bought Monday is the lightest of the 3 … I had already purchased a more medium shade and a darker shade.  Hey, at least I’m consistent on what catches my eye, right?  ha!

The last 2 days, I’ve been watching the Ts.  Red heart  I was there from early morning until time for swim practice after dinner … a couple of long and exhausting days.  While I’m looking forward to a couple of quiet days at home, where I can spend plenty of time reacquainting myself with T#3’s quilt blocks, I’m sure missing those Ts of mine.

I’ve been sneezing and sniffling the last couple of days … T#4 has a full-blown cold, and I’m suspecting that she may have decided to share with her Nana.  Surprised smile  I guess I shouldn’t complain … if I’ve made it almost all the way to the end of January without a cold, I shouldn’t complain.  Winking smile

I hope that whatever you have planned for today includes a little something that brings you joy! Have a great day!

  1. it is very hard to go through fabric and organize it I think, and keep it organized. One day I need to go through 2 tubs of scraps - one day

  2. I hate organizing, but I sure do like it when things are organized. Glad you got yours done.

Hope you don't get a full-out cold. Take care!

  3. Organizing fabric is something I have to do often! I know I will be going back there also. I think it says somewhere on their website that they have 7000 bolts of fabric in the shop. Sensory overload for sure!

  5. Hi Kathy, This post surprised me about your fabric bins-I would have thought you had them perfectly folded and organized, but I'm thankful that someone else out there is not crazy about keeping their stash perfect. I'm hoping it isn't the chest cold you are catching-hubby and I still cough every now and then; I'm ready for it to be gone for good.
Hope you can get some rest this afternoon.
    Hugs, Noreen

  6. Don't you love it when they share the germs? I'm bad about organizing the sewing room (or the rest of the house!). It is a total mess in mine right now - something about a bin of blue dumped on the floor and piles of projects. Sunday is my clean up day (or so I tell myself).

  7. Glad you have your fabric organized. I have mine by color in large plastic drawers. It has saved me many $$$! I can find what I have! Organizing is definitely a worthwhile effort. Hope your sniffles don't get any worse. ~Jeanne

  8. Looks like you picked up mostly Kansas Troubles and Primitive Gatherings fabrics--two favorites with me, as well. Never hurts to have something you love in a variety of shades. : )
It is nice when you get things organized. For me the trick is keeping them that way!
Hope the cold doesn't hit you too hard.

  9. I hate to tell you how many times I have bought the same fabric. Guess that means we really like it.

Stay healthy! I hope the sneezes don't develop into anything.

  11. So what size ruler did you wind up getting? I agree 18" would be too big for most of what I piece.. I do have a 12 1/2" square ruler I love though :) It is big but not unweldy. Glad you got a couple good days with your grandkids... sorry 1 was sick and shared with you though... hope you don't get full blown and can enjoy a day off and at home... maybe some log cabin sewing in your future??? lol Kathi

  12. It's always good to catch up with you! I laughed about you buying the same fabric 3 times, 'cause I'm guilty of doing similar things :) I forget, sometimes, what I already have!
Thanks so much for the sweet comment you left on my blog, concerning Ed's work situation. It helps to know that others have had similar experiences, and things worked out well for them. We are beginning to truly see this as a blessing, as time goes by :)
Enjoy your weekend, with some needle and thread time!

  13. I hope you don't get the full blown version. It took be a week and a half to get over it.
I love all of your fabric. I love knowing I have stuff all organized. I do get tired watching the kids. I can never figure it out as I enjoy it. I hope you get to quilt and I hope you feel better.

  14. I came online tonight and thought to myself I wonder what's up from Kathy, she hasn't posted in a while, only to discover I missed this one, lol. Anyway, if you saw my fabric stash you'd be crying, lol. I have such a mess. I LOVE organization, but it just isn't me. One of my sisters came over and organized it all for me (took her hours) about a year ago and I was sooo grateful. She threatened me with repercussions if I didn't keep it that way, lol, and I did really good for a while, but it's back to it's giant mess. The bottom line is I have TOO much. I need to probably eliminate but I can never bear to part with anything. I need to maybe have a separate space that keeps "scraps" and another whole place for new fabric. Someday I will get it that way again. Hope you get over your cold quickly. I was just thinking the other day it is almost the end of January and I have not had any colds...How can that be? lol (shouldn't have said it) Have a good week-end my friend!
