Some of This and Some of That

Ok, I have to be honest and confess that I'm feeling a little bummed today.  On my Facebook feed, I got the daily suggestion to share a memory ... and the memory chosen was a post from our visit to Hilton Head May 2012.  That reminded me that we've visited Hilton Head every May for the last 9 years (except the year we went to Disney World with DD and her family).  Obviously we had to cancel our reservation for two weeks in Hilton Head this year because I'm still in treatment.  We would be in "packing mode" right now, with plans to leave this coming Sunday. We cancelled several months ago when it became obvious that my treatment would extend beyond May, but it really didn't hit me until I saw that memory suggestion on Facebook.  The good news is that, God willing, we're still on for our trip in September.

Tuesday was chemo #3. It was, as usual, very uneventful. But God made sure that I realized just how blessed I am. There was a woman in the chair to my left who was going to have to be there most all the day. And there was a frail older woman two cubicles down who looked to be 95. She must have just been diagnosed today as I could hear them explaining everything in great detail to her and her son.  Please pray for all of us who are fighting this horrible beast.

We finished up with chemo a little after 12:00, so of course DH and I "had" to stop somewhere for lunch ... we drove to the Hill for lunch. Yum!  I couldn't eat all my tortellini, so I had leftovers for dinner.  Double yum!

Wednesday morning was spent in the sewing room where I finished my tumbler flimsie.  It's almost ready for quilting ... I need to square up the sides and choose the backing.  The quilt will finish approximately 36"x36" so a yard of fabric should be enough.  I need to go through my stash to see if I have a yard of something suitable (I usually grab fat quarters if I'm supplementing my stash). I have enough leftover tumblers to make a smaller wall hanging or table topper, so I started piecing that together.  I'm not sure just what I'll do with that ... right now I'm considering gifting it to an old friend.  We'd grown apart but had made a little bit of peace last fall.  But once I was diagnosed, she's been such a faithful friend ... I'd like to let her know how much her encouragement and support has meant to me.

DH and I went for a nice walk after lunch Wednesday. I continue to pick up a little speed and walk a little further.  It was such a delightful day (even if it was very windy) for a nice walk so we did a walkabout in the yard, checking out our garden and our blooming plants.
Variegated weigelia (which has overgrown its spot ... it's double the size that the planting instructions indicated it would be).

One of three of our azaleas ... the other two are lagging behind a little

One of our tomato plants ... beefsteak variety ... blooming already!

I spent Wednesday evening with DD and my Ts.  We went to Build-a-Bear to build Star Wars bears to celebrate ... May the 4th be with you!  I wish I'd thought to take pictures of their bears.  Our dinner that evening was Star Wars themed ... including a 7 Leia dip.  DD is so creative.

I plan to spend my Thursday in the sewing room ... with another nice long walk this afternoon as it's supposed to be even nicer today (although it's still very windy). And of course I'll be watching Game 4 of the conference semi-finals tonight. Let's go Blues!

I hope that whatever you have planned for today includes a little something that brings you joy ... have a great day!
Kathy

  1. I'm sure at times your health is depressing and worrisome - we all hope you will be in Hilton Head in September. I bet your friend would love that tumbler quilt as a table topper! your garden and flowers are coming along really well. Glad you chemo is still going well. I must say if I was the 95 year old I would think twice before I started on chemo - well her life really be extended or is it possibly for a pain management type of thing I wonder.

I always pray for everyone who is enduring Chemo - I remember going with my friend to her visits & she would tell me about all the familiar faces - & how many news ones come in. Cancer just BITES!!!!
Loving your quilt as always!! So gorgeous.

  3. It's sad you've had to cancel your plans for your may trip but you'll still have something to look forward to when your chemo is over and you're feeling better in September.

Look at your perfectly pieced corners on the tumblers. Amazing! I really like the colors you chose. I haven't used grey in quilts yet but yours look great in this quilt. How good that you and your friend are friends again after a time apart.

    Blessings to you, Kathy.

  5. I am just so impressed at how well you are doing and pray that you continue to do so. I'm sure there are some really sad situations there in the cancer treatment centers. It is so sad! So glad you have your trip to look forward to in Sept.

  7. I'm sorry you aren't packing for the beach. But I'm so glad that you've already booked for the fall and can look forward to that AND that you are doing well. Sometimes I think we have to have reminders of how blessed we really are - I think you got some on Tuesday. Hang in there - it's fine to be bummed some days. ~Jeanne

  8. I know what you mean - facebook often gives me shocks of memory - good, and some I'd prefer to forget, but that's life. We just have to take the good with the bad, and there truly is a LOT of good. And as you've discovered, there is always someone having a rougher time than you. I totally believe you'll be right back there enjoying the beach and your walks and happy times in September!

Praying for you during your continued treatments and rejoicing over your quilting finishes, near finishes and plans for that "next one". The Star War themed day sounds like it was lots of fun. Hugs~

  12. Yes, I am sure it was depressing to realize again that you will miss your trip this year in May, and I am sorry to hear that. But it does seem as if all systems are GO for September and I will definitely join you in prayer that will indeed be the case. And in the meantime you are checking those last chemo treatments off one by one and doing SOO well. I just think you are doing amazingly as you have handled it all sooo well. Both physically and mentally. And you've almost finished up that beautiful quilt, and are enjoying your beloved baseball games and all those T's. YES, God is good. I remember sitting in that oncologist's office almost six years ago now looking at all the various people who were also in the clutches of this horrible disease and praying for them and thanking God that I was as fortunate as I was. I try to remember ALL who are fighting this in my prayers. Have a wonderful Mother's Day Kathy! God has blessed you and loves you and wants His very best for you....doesn't get much better. HUGS

  15. I love your little tumbler top! And I am glad to hear that you are able to enjoy walks. I am trying to get out now that the weather here in Michigan has finally improved! Your plants are just lovely! I have a "black" thumb, but DH more than makes up for it :).

  17. Happy Saturday to you Kathy! So thankful you are handling the treatments so well. That is so sad about the little lady and her son-if I was her age, I'd skip treatments altogether. That quilt top looks great, job well done. I've still got two sides of the border to do for mine and then binding. Hope you have an incredible weekend and Happy Mother's Day!
    Love, Noreen
