Catching up on Thursday
I’m still trying to get back into my “normal” at-home routine. I admit that when I get up in the morning, I want to walk to the windows and look for the sun rising up out of the ocean … not to mention that after lunch, I find myself thinking about changing clothes so I can head out to walk along the beach.
But I am glad to be home … where I have gotten back into my sewing/quilting routine! Tuesday morning, I finished tidying up all the loose threads and was able to snap a quick picture before it was time to start basting. Please ignore the ironing board legs on the left and the folding tables (for basting) on the right. My sewing space is just too small, so this stage of the quilting process takes place in the living room (the only room with enough floor space for everything).
The basting process went quickly enough, and I was able to sit down late Tuesday afternoon to do a little hand quilting! Woo hoo!
I am making pretty good progress.I’m using Aurifil 28 wt variegated thread … my first time with that particular thread (it’s going well enough, but I still prefer YLI 40/3) and with variegated thread. If you look closely, you can see the variegation in the red center, the second blue “log” below it and the second white “log” above it.
There won’t be much quilting going on today as the Ts are coming over a little later on. I don’t mind giving up some quilting time when it means time spent with my Ts! There will be plenty of time to quilt tomorrow, especially since our Cardinals play – Game 1 of the NLDS.
I hope that whatever you have planned for today includes a little something that brings you joy! Have a great day!
Kathy

I know what you mean it takes awhile to get back into your routine. I kind of miss my regular exercise walking around the campgrounds - I was able to do it whenever I wanted to - now I'm back home on a country road with no room to walk as there are no shoulders on the road, logging trucks go back, fast traffic at times and there are too many stray dogs to feel safe - I have to get back to my exercise routine now of driving 12 miles to the fitness center or the walking trails.
ReplyDeletelove the quilt and I love variegated thread.
It is looking great! I think the variegated thread will be a really fun touch. I love vacations but it is always great to be home. This afternoon after work, I am picking up Baby E. I will sacrifice quilting for my little ones too!
ReplyDeleteLove your quilting on your spiral log cabin with that varigated thread... keep up the great work! I use Aurifil 28 for color as well but much prefer YLI as well! ha :)
ReplyDeleteGood luck to your Cardinals... I never was into sports much and neither is my honey so that is good I think!
I hope you have a joyous day with your t's and lotion your hands as they rest...they will thank you later! lol Kathi
Very pretty, Kathy. The changing thread colors will be an interesting touch to an already interesting quilt.
ReplyDeleteOh Kathy I am loving the quilt!! It's perfect. I honestly just can't even imagine putting in all of those quilting stitches by hand!! What an undertaking, but I know you love it and it is your favorite part. And it looks sooo beautiful! So much of YOU goes into your quilts this way too I am sure. I enlarged the close up of your stitches so I could see the thread better and you have picked the perfect thread to use I think. I am loving the variegated. Enjoy those T's today, and enjoy your stitching when you get to it!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! I love the colors in that quilt. I enlarged to see the changes of the thread colors. So very pretty and your stitches are so even and perfect.
ReplyDeleteMy plans are after work to have soup and sandwich for supper and then to do some more loom knitting. I just completed a scarf last night and started on a matching hat. I've got so many ideas of other things to make and mostly right now I'm using yarn I've already purchased, so there isn't much expense. Can't wait to get off work.
Congrats on your Cardinals being in the playoffs. Alas, my Reds did not make it. :-(
Hope you have a great day too!
ReplyDeleteBEAUTIFUL!!!! What a bright happy quilt to lift your spirits as you stitch :) I too have to find room to baste my quilt sandwiches - my least favorite part of the process!!!
ReplyDeleteGreat start Kathy! I am with you on the aurifil thread. I love it for machine piecing but for hand quilting its the pits in my book. I played a bit this morning with the presencia thread and oh my it is wonderful. It has a pretty sheen and glides thru the fabric without that feeling that it is falling apart. I love YLI too, but the colors are limited. So presencia will be my option in the future when I need a certain color.
ReplyDeleteKathy, you new quilt is just beautiful! As always, I am so impressed with your hand quilting. I haven't the patience for it but I do love to see what others are doing by hand, and yours are some of the prettiest out there!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful quilt! I love the variegated thread. I think log cabin quilt are still my favorite. Have a fun time with your "friend,":)
ReplyDeleteIt always feels good to get back to the routine. I LOVE your quilt. Have fun with the quilting.
ReplyDeleteHi there, I love this quilt-I've never had luck with basting,so simply use safety pins. I do use Aurifil for my machine and love it due to it's light weight; never tried it for quilting though-it actually looks pretty thick. I have one block or two to work on tonight and then another tomorrow before I put on the binding. Hope you had fun with your T's. Sending you big Autumn hugs.

As always, your quilts are beautiful!
ReplyDeleteWouldn't it be nice if we could just bring the beach home with us when we have to leave?!
We were just gone 4 days and it has taken me the rest of the week to get "back on track." I always get thrown off when we're gone and I don't like that but it can't be avoided when you travel. Hope you are having a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteThe quilt is lovely. I know your missing the beach and all I think about each day is having a beach trip. I am so in need of one today!!!
