Wednesday Hodgepodge

It’s Wednesday again … and we all know that means that it’s time for some Hodgepodge.  Why not join in the fun?  Just click on the button above.

1. Have you learned more from success or failure? Explain.

I’m sure I’ve learned more from failure … not only have I (eventually) learned how to do whatever it was that I was trying to do, but I also learned patience, perseverance and determination.  I learned how to plan, prepare and even succeed from my failures.  I also learned that the world wasn’t going to end when I didn’t succeed.

2.  What did you call your grandparents when you were growing up? If you have children, what do they call your parents? If you have grandchildren, what do they call you?

I called my grandparents Grandma and Grandpa.  When DD became pregnant with T#1, she asked if I wanted to be called something special … and I chose Nana.  Red heart

3.  You're invited to a luau.  In keeping with that theme, what dish will you bring to share?

I will take a pineapple upside down cake … it features pineapple, and I love pineapple upside down cake.

4. Besides Jesus, what one person's life story do you think everyone should know about?

Abraham Lincoln.

5. "Don't sweat the small stuff." Agree or Disagree? Why?

Definitely agree.  The small stuff generally doesn’t matter one little bit in the overall scheme of things … so fretting over the small stuff only serves to get us all worked up over something that probably isn’t going to matter in the long run.  It also causes us to take our focus on the “big stuff”, the stuff that really matters.

6.  June is National Rivers Month. When were you last on a river? What's the prettiest river you've ever seen? What's a river you'd like to see?

The last time we were on a river was last October … we took a river cruise, and I wrote about it here.  I’m trying to think of other rivers we’ve seen … I’m not sure that I can recall one that I would classify as pretty, nor can I think of a river that I’d like to see.  I’m more of an ocean kind of gal.  Winking smile

7.  Speaking of rivers-paddling, fishing, swimming, or bird watching safely from the shore? Which activity would you choose? Yes-you have to choose.

Whatever activity I choose, it will be done safely from the shore … so I’m guessing that means that I’ll choose bird watching.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

DH reports that things aren’t looking very good at our garden … our tomatoes are beginning to show the effects of being underwater over the weekend.  Anything that had sprouted from our first planting appears to be doing ok, but nothing has sprouted from our second planting.  Hopefully we’ll see some sprouting in the next couple of days.  We’re already making alternate plans for next year’s garden … we are thinking about putting in some raised beds out in the back yard.

  3. Our garden is way behind this year, weather related mostly. We have raise beds for most of our plantings (flowers and vegetables) and this year we are trying more containers. Our ground has tons of clay in it and no matter how much we amend it, plants don't grow well. Hope yours begins to do better

  4. I thought the same thing, "I'm an ocean type of girl!" :), but I like salt rivers okay.

So sorry about the garden! Raised beds would be nice, I like those!

We're experimenting with gardening in large containers--for those days when we're no longer able to garden in the field. I actually grew some great squash in a large pot, this year, and my lettuce, cabbage, and tomatoes are doing well, too. A big plus is not having to worry about too much water either! (although we're NOT having that problem, yet!)

  5. Too bad about all of that rain. I think putting in raised beds would be nice. This is a group of very nice questions. They are having an exhibit down in L.A. this month on Abraham Lincoln. I think it would be nice to go and see.

  7. I did not put in a garden this year or last year. We, too, are rethinking how we garden. We have raised beds, but are considered container gardening and adding paving stones to the area. But our strawberries and berry bushes are doing great.
Sorry your garden has been drowned.

  8. Great answers. Bummer on the garden. I'm still trying to figure out Florida gardening. It was so much easier in Vermont! No wild bunnies getting into my garden and eating everything up.

  9. My sister likes being called Nana too. My first thought was pineapple for a Luau. Abraham Lincoln is a wonderful choice. Kinda goes along with my answer. In the beginning of life the small stuff seems really big. Glad to hear that your garden is doing well. Enjoy your day!

  11. We have raised beds and they are very easy to care for and walk around. Of course we only plant for 2 of us but still. Food is food.

  12. Did you go over the Suwanee River when you were in Florida. I sing every time I cross! :)

    Sorry about the garden!

  15. Some of our answers were very similiar. Sorry about your garden, Hubby's is thriving right now but we'll be gone all next week, so we'll see how it survives.

  16. Sorry about your garden : ( Lots of people now do the raised beds, which seem like a lot of work to get started, but are probably worth it in the end.

  17. I read your answer to #4, Lincoln. Having just seen the movie not too long ago, I'm now seeing that a couple of other Hodgepodge participants read/are reading the book, Killing Lincoln, by Bill O'Reilly. Have you seen the movie, and/or read the book? I'm very curious to read the book now... Well, have a great day, and an even better weekend! ~tina
