Friday afternoon after a visit with our neighbors, DH and I took a “walk-about” around the yard, checking for signs of spring. While it’s still too early for our landscaping, we did find some signs of spring … in our trees.
Here’s our flowering pear … from the looks of it, it will be blooming before too much longer. Oh, I’ll know it’s spring when something is blooming!
Forgive the blurriness … I took these with my phone.
Our flowering cherry is a little further behind. With any luck, it’ll be flowering by the time the pear is done … in my ideal world there will always be something blooming.
I’d read online that weeds were annuals, and that they’d die over the winter. Well, I’m here to tell you that it’s not true … at least not in my yard!
Trust me … this is not spring growth … this pesky dandelion has been surviving our winter just fine … as have been his brothers and sisters throughout my landscaping and lawn. <sigh>
Saturday provided more hope that spring is just around the corner … it was a sunny, warm day. Granted our high was still 5 degrees below normal, but it was pleasant.
Sunday dashed our hopes. Noon Saturday vs Noon Sunday:Need I say more?
Except there is more. About 8:00 last night I waded through the snow on the deck to measure the snow … my unofficial report was that we had 8 1/4” … and it was still snowing. I’m not sure how accurate that was because by then the winds had really started to blow … no point in going out to measure this morning as I can see huge drifts, even out on our deck. The official report from St. Louis is 12.2”.
We learned our lesson from the last snowfall (6”) … we got out 3 times yesterday and were able to keep the driveway respectably cleared. Of course, with the high winds we had last night, we now have drifts in the driveway. No need to go to the Y when we can get plenty of exercise shoveling.
Hopefully this is Winter’s last hurrah … we are ready for spring here at Chez Nana.
I was just going to email you to see how much snow! We only got a couple of inches but of course, we haven't seen the bare ground here since early December. Hope your winds die down, the snow stops, and that you can get out and do whatever you need to do. It might be a good day to quilt! Where is spring????? ~Jeanne
ReplyDeleteGood morning! WOW! Yes, I bet you are hoping this is the last of it! Enjoy your day!
ReplyDeleteAmazing!!! Bring on spring!
ReplyDeleteI am so ready for spring too. Bring on the flowers!
ReplyDeleteWe're getting snow here too, but thankfully, not as much as you. Come on spring!
ReplyDeleteI saw on the local news that you all were getting snowed on big time :( I'm so sorry for you because I too would love to see some spring around here. We have too much snow on the ground to even see weeds! I hope the sun comes out soon and melts everything you have. The storm is going to miss us for once! :)
ReplyDeleteSaw on the news that you had snow and wondered how you were faring.
ReplyDeleteIt's snowing here at the moment, but I don't think it's supposed to accumulate. I hope not anyway!
ReplyDeleteMarch is always temperamental : )
I think we need to start a rally "NO MORE SNOW" ... I'll start making signs :)
ReplyDeleteStay warm!
Oh wow, what a difference a day makes, huh?
ReplyDeleteSending "warm" thoughts your way :)
I'm with you on the weeds: if anything they come back with more force!
ReplyDeleteThe snow is pretty, although I know you're tired of it by now!
The promise of spring is still there... not too deep below the surface!
ReplyDeleteSorry, Kathy. We had a cold front blow in yesterday, too. Mid thirties here. I'm just hoping we don't lose any of the already well started things out there!
ReplyDeleteOur trees are starting to bud out, too! However, spring doesn't seem to be anywhere in sight! UGH! I can't believe you got that much snow, Kathy! My heart just aches for you!
ReplyDeleteIt is fun having some color all year long. I cannot believe your two photos of the porch. Really....over 8 inches of snow! That's really something about that weed. Glad you have some signs of Spring. Such crazy weather everywhere!
ReplyDeleteYou can't kill dandelions with a double barrel shotgun! They are natural survivors and they are alive and well and multiplying here in Florida !
ReplyDeleteWow! Glad we don't get snow, but our temps dropped 30 degrees in 24 hours from Sunday to today and is supposed to be colder tomorrow. I'm so ready for spring!
Wow! You got hit with a lot of snow! I do not envy you.
ReplyDeleteOh boy I'm with you - I HOPE this is winter's last hurrah!!! We had snow flurries today and low 30's temps, but the wind was blowing about 30 mph so it felt absolutely frigid!!! I'm really tired of winter - COME ON SPRING!!!
ReplyDeleteHi there, I hope the snow has stopped at your house. We got hit pretty bad over the weekend, but it was a good time to just stay inside. Now we have clear blue skies but the temp. is just 25 degrees. I have been waiting to go on a walk til it got reasonable outside. I want to ask you in your flowering Pear tree has any fruit it drops. My flowering Cherry doesn't look so good this year and after realizing how poisonous some fruits from trees are for our pets, am thinking twice about adding more. Hope you have a warm and wonderful day!
ReplyDeleteLove, Noreen
Yes I am sure you are ready for spring! Hope you have a pretty Easter!
ReplyDeleteWell it has to be about over don't you think with the trees budding? It looks pretty though. You know I think dandelions could survive anything.
ReplyDeleteIt all looks nice. Spring has to be around the corner.
