Sunday’s Stitching

Of both the fast and slow varieties.  Winking smile

Yesterday I spent several hours in the sewing room.  I didn’t accomplish quite as much as I had intended because I had to do some unstitching … this time because when I was pressing two rows together, I noticed that one of the light gray pieces was a slightly different shade than all the others.  I looked under different lighting conditions and held several other pieces against it … yep, it was different.  While it wasn’t a huge difference, it bothered me enough to replace it.  I had to unstitch a good chunk of the row and then unstitch to remove that HST block.  Thankfully I had a few HST blocks already stitched together so I just sewed it into place and then sewed the rows back together.  Time consuming but worth it to me.

I ended up sewing together 6 of the 8 pairs of rows so now I have 3 sets of 4 rows together.  Today I’m going to sew together the last 2 pairs of rows and then join together all 4 sets.

After I finish up the quilt top, I probably ought to start cutting the border fabrics (and the last of the fabric for my pineapple quilt for retreat), but I’m anxious to get back to my hexies.  I started another Martha Washington’s Flower Garden block last night after dinner.  I need to count them again to see how many blocks I have finished … the down side to working on this sporadically is that I can never remember how many I have finished.  All I know is that I’ve got enough hexies ready and waiting to make a total of 50 blocks.  photo (4)I think that this is my least favorite block as I just don’t like the center and inner ring combination.  But I’m going to finish it … we’ll see how it looks when I lay them all out on my design floor.  And since I’m planning on setting my blocks in a 7x7 layout, there will be a block leftover … it may be this one.  I’ll be linking to Kathy’s Slow Sunday Stitching and to A Quilting Reader’s Garden’s Hexie Weekend.

During our evening visit to the garden, I discovered 2 more zucchinis … a total of 4 now.  We harvested one and added it to the zucchinis DH bought at the farmers market yesterday morning (one zucchini just won’t be enough for the two of us) … we’ll be having zucchini with dinner tonight.  photo (2)-001

Hope you all are having a blessed Sunday!

Kathy

  1. So glad you decided to exchange it with an extra already made... good eyes... and great idea! I find time picking out can be therapeutic too... instead of seeing it as wasting time.. think of it as time to pray for someone... God will tell you who if you ask :) So my friends get LOTS of prayers ! ha :D I like that center fabric but I know if I don't like something I lay with it until I do... sometimes those kind of blocks fade away.. sometimes they stick out in a layout.. you will have to see when you can keep count! lol Kathi

  3. I do not think my garden will produce decently this summer at all - two zucchini only so far! maybe one tiny one that I can see growing and I see no more - little more on tomatoes but will not be enough to can -at least the herbs are doing well still - the mints are the best!

  4. I am the same way - I would have had to take that lighter colored one out. You will be very happy that you did :) Your hexies are moving right along; I love the fall colors in this one. Fresh veggies!!! And zucchini is one of my favorites :)

  6. So much trouble to unstitch a row and replace a block! But worth it! You know you will just not be happy with it if you don't! Good news about the garden!

  7. Unstitching is even more frustrating with handwork, but it is good to know what will bother you later. Enjoy your zucchini!

  8. Well I have zucchini FLOWERS thus far :)

I did something stupid when joining rows on my basket / sampler quilt and had to undo every stitch and start again. Fun stuff! :)

  9. I agree if something bothers you, it is best to take the time to fix it. Your really making good progress on those blocks.

  10. Unstitching is annoying but necessary sometimes. It is no use leaving the offending block in and trying to forget about it because you never will. I have been told that there are some quilters who always try to include a mistake but I just can't do it. I like the hexi block that is bothering you but I can also see how it might do so. Looking forward to seeing what you do with it.

  11. It's a lot of trouble to unstitch but totally worth it. A couple of times I have ignored the problem only to unstitch even more later . Hope you got the top together today.

The block for your MWFG may surprise you when you get it with the others but glad you'll have an extra, just in case.

  12. Your hexies look wonderful You have done a great job. I bet you were so happy you had taken the time to take out what you didn't like in your other quilt. Your zucchini looks great. We had that for dinner last night. It is so nice to be eating out of the garden.
    Have a lovely day.

  14. I weigh which will bother me more, the unpicking or the error. Sometimes it stays, sometimes it goes. : )

  17. Oh, how annoying to find a mismatched triangle, but then how great to find it before the whole quilt was together!

  18. You will be happeir having removed it. If you are like me, that would be the only thing you would see when you look at the finish.

  19. I have a hexi quilt that I've been working on for a year now. It's getting close, but I go through periods of loosing interest. Good thing I'm not in a hurry! Oh, and I would probably have replaced the grey, too, lol!

  20. I'm just like you are. I would have to rip out the part of the quilt that bothered me. We must both have some 'perfectionist' tendencies:)

I hope you enjoyed your zucchinis for dinner last night! My daughter tried her first attempt at zucchini bread, this year, and it was very good!

  21. Unsewing seems to be the story of my quilting life recently. One project is so overwhelming it has been shelved until winter. Don't you love hexies though - so much satisfaction from watching them accumulate!
You probably know that in a short time, your zucchini crop will feed the world!
