Wednesday Hodgepodge

We’re halfway through this week already … and that means that it’s time for some Hodgepodge.

1. Noah Webster was born this week back in 1758....besides the online version, do you own a dictionary?  Do you ever use the hardback copy or is your hunt for a definition strictly online these days?

I no longer own a dictionary.  When we downsized to our current home, we had to put our bookcases in the basement.  It became much easier/more convenient to just check online than to trudge down to the basement and look up the word.

2.  Should public schools ban Halloween celebrations?  What about other holiday celebrations currently under fire?

I think it’s just a shame that so many holidays and celebrations are banned (or  renamed) because they might be offensive to some.  It’s impossible to sanitize life enough that no one will be offended.

3.  What's your favorite 'dog' movie?

The first dog movie that came to my mind was Old Yeller.  Several other dog movies then came to my mind, and I realized that they all had sad endings … why is it that movies featuring dogs almost always have the dog die at the end?

4.  When were you last somewhere you'd describe as 'too quiet'?

Some might consider my morning, as I’m sitting here typing this, too quiet.  I’m here all alone (DH has breakfast with friends on Wednesday mornings), and it’s perfectly quiet.  But I am quite comfortable with quiet, so I wouldn’t describe it as too quiet.

5.  Are you a neat cook or a messy cook?  In other words do you clean as you go or make a big mess and then deal with it later?

I cannot stand a messy kitchen … so I clean as I go.

6.  Did you hear about Felix Baumgartner, the skydiver who broke the sound barrier via parachute?  Was your first thought  COOL! or was your first thought CRAZY!  Are you adventurous?

Cah-razy!  My first and all subsequent thoughts were that was just plain crazy.  I’m not very adventurous, and I’m not ashamed of that fact.  Winking smile

7.  What's not a word but should be?

I’m drawing a blank here.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

Nothing on my agenda today (possibly the only day this week where I’ll have a free day), so I’m hoping to finish up my wall quilt today.  Then I’ll ask DH to help me move my sewing table out to the living room (it’s times like these that I’m glad my sewing table is a standard 5’ metal folding table) so I can start piecing my next quilt (with my new sewing machine!!) and still watch the ball game.

Speaking of ball game, my Cardinals didn’t fare too well Monday night, but there are still 5 games left in this series … and they only have to win 3 more.  Game 3 of the series is later this afternoon.  Unfortunately there’s a front that’s supposed to move through this afternoon … while we could certainly stand some rain, I’m hoping that the front gets stalled and doesn’t come through until around 9:00PM.  Winking smile

  1. All the celebration stuff is basically due to people not having other things to do with their lives. If only I can give them half my schoolwork - they'll be too busy to care about political correctness.

  2. I think we're all pretty much on the same page with #2. I do think that kids should be able to have fun celebrations at school, but I do think they have to be named in such a way as to appease the majority of folks. People are so sue crazy these days...you just have to be careful. Sad, sad times. Pulling for your Cardinals to pull out a big win! Happy Wednesday, Kathy!

  3. Old Yeller? Oh man... pass the kleenex. I honestly will pass on dog movies most of the times because I know its going to be a heart wrencher.

  4. I clean as I go while I am cooking. I can't stand a messy kitchen.

  5. I agree on #2. I try to clean up in the kitchen as I go, but don't always get it done. You know you're right....the dogs do die in so many of those movies.

Hope your Cardinals get to play and win today!

  6. I really enjoy my quiet mornings. It's the only time that the traffic is slow on the highway and I can think without the background noise of vehicles passing by. I agree with your thoughts about Halloween and holidays. I really like how you worded that! Have a great week:)

  7. Good morning! More in common as always....ALWAYS clean as I go. I hate a mess, haha! I have gotten rid of our dictionary for the same reason, and I LOVE QUIET! haha Have a good day Kathy!

  8. It's amazing how similar our answers to #2 and #6 are!

Good luck to your Cardinals :)

  9. From all the posts I have read, the majority do not support banning holidays. If the majority of the population supports it, why do only a few ruin the fun for the rest of us?

  10. I still can't watch Old Yeller to this day! I think a lot of us ladies clean as we go, just makes it so much easier later.

  11. We drove by the new Busch Stadium a few times when we were in St. Louis. Looks nice! My nephew and brother-in-law are huge Cardinals fans. Us? We like the Royals. Not so much to cheer about with them, though, Sigh.

  12. I think the parties at school are fun for the kids. It's America, it's what we do! I too much clean as I go or I go crazy.
    Go Cardinals!

  14. I think most dog movies try to capture the love between man and his best friend. Love and loss are all tangled up together when you own a dog. You know they won't live forever, but you don't think about it until the day you are forced to face that fact. I kind of like the sadness in a dog movie...in a way it speaks of love.

  15. I will be cheering for the Cards since the Reds got beat. I don't follow baseball much, except this time of year, but I know how much fun it is to support your team!

  16. So true, that we cannot sanitize life enough to avoid offending someone; and then again, would we even want to try? Might be pretty bland.

I wreck the entire kitchen, use things I did not know I owned, and then call in a "crew" to restore order. :) Of course, failing that, I could always just move.

  17. I still have dictionaries and I have used it this year. lol But they are going by the wayside I will admit.

    I am a neat cook too - I clean as I go!

  18. I have gotten rid of all my dictionaries, reference books etc...don't even have a phone book anymore, come to think of it maps either. I always get everything on line.
I am a neat cook as well
