Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. Summer officially rolls in with the Hodgepodge this week, for those of us in the Northern hemisphere anyway. What song says summer 2012 to you?
I don’t know that I can identify a song that says summer to me, let alone summer 2012.

2. What's your favorite quintessential summer food?
This will be a hard one for me … I don’t want to have to choose between watermelon, peaches, and sweet corn on the cob.  But since I “have” to, I’ll choose watermelon.  It’s so refreshing, and eating watermelon always reminds me of my childhood summers … a slice of red, ripe watermelon served on my mom’s Coca Cola tray while listening to the Cardinals game on the radio.

3. I've spent a lot of time traipsing up and down the NJ Turnpike in recent weeks. Did you know the rest areas on the turnpike are named after people who lived or worked in NJ? Clara Barton, Walt Whitman, James Fenimore Cooper, Molly Pitcher, Joyce Kilmer, Thomas Edison, and Gover Clevland just to name a few. Of those I listed, who would you most like to have known and why?
Thomas Edison … he invented so many more things than just a long-lasting electrical light bulb.  “Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration.”

4. At what age did you move out of your parent's house and what prompted the move?
I moved out when I was 20, when I married my ex-husband.

5. What's more satisfying to you-saving time or saving money?
Saving money is more satisfying, although I’m always on the lookout for ways to save time (patience is not one of my virtues Winking smile).

6. Name something you think brings out the good in people.
Listening … really listening to them is a good way, I think, to bring out the best in people.

7. This last question comes to you courtesy of Kathy over at Reflections...will you be taking a vacation or a staycation this summer? If so where will you go? If a staycation is on the calendar have you made any special plans to fill the time?
Neither.  We don’t take summer vacations … we travel in the spring and the fall, when the beach is less crowded and it’s easier to get affordable lodging.  But I’m sure having beach withdrawal this summer … I want to go SO bad.

8. Insert your own random thought here.
It’s been/going to be a busy week here at Chez Nana.  I’m in the baby/toddler nursery every night for VBS, I watched the kiddos for the Moms Group at church yesterday morning, this morning my dad has a follow-up appointment for his cataract surgery earlier this month, I’ve got a semi-annual dental appointment this afternoon, I’ll be watching my Ts tomorrow during the day (and possibly on Saturday, too) and DH gets a tooth pulled Friday afternoon.

I’ve switched to comment moderation because I’m getting some spam comments.  Confused smile  In checking out my comments section in Blogger, I found a good 25-30 comments from the last year and a half that were incorrectly identified as spam and never delivered to my email (or published) … from people who comment regularly.  Surprised smile  Hopefully by switching to comment moderation, all comments will be sent to my email for my determination if they’re spam or not … but I’ll be checking out my comments section in Blogger regularly now.

  1. I always glance at my spam folder before I delete. Not many slip thru but I've caught a couple that way. You do sound busy this week! We like to travel in September...the weather is usually wonderful and kids are back in school so things are less crowded.

  2. Listening... I like that answer... makes such a difference when you know people really hear what you say.

  3. We always vacation in April. That vacation I look forward to. I really have no interest in going away in the summer. Its when everyone does and I find there is stuff to do right around here.

  6. I thought of you during our stay at the beach. I think you are one of the few people I know who loves it as much as I do :) I'm blessed to live so close.
It's a great idea to visit in spring and fall to avoid the crowds and high prices. Sometimes we go in September, after Labor Day.

Wow, you will need a vacation after your busy week! So much going on at your house. Enjoy the rest of the week!

  7. Taking vacations to the beach is wise from someone who lived near the beach. We almost never went in the summer on a weekend. Too many people!

  9. I agree the music was hard to pick and so was the food. I said watermelon and tomatoes because I cheated. lol

Hope you make it to the beach in the fall and your week sounds extremely busy. Wow!

I'm thinking I better go check my comments section!

    Have a great day.

  10. We like to take vacations after school starts because of the shorter lines and such. I love summer music so that was easy for me but just picking one summer food!!!!! Not so easy. I don't look at my spam folder very much, guess I should look.

  11. I love watermelon in the summertime! Thomas Edison was my second choice...I've always had a dream of being an inventor. Do you ever watch Shark Tank? I cannot wait to go to HHI next month! I'm sure it will be as hot as ever, but I won't have a care in the world! :)

  12. Hi Kathy, This is one of those days when I wish you were in my neighborhood; I could use your quilting ideas. I got a panel to use, fussy cut, for the grandson's baby quilt. I usually frame the fussy cuts out, either in log cabin or some other pattern but I'm having a quilting block and can't decide what to do-I have five coordinating fabrics, just can't figure out what to frame out the 6" squares.
I love watermelon during summer, but all the ones I bought this year have been mushy. I also love cherries and of course grapes plus corn on the cob. Our weather today was 15 degrees cooler and it will be hot tomorrow. This weekend I think I'll settle down to cut & sew, just wish I would get a vision for this little guys quilt.
    Have a great evening.

  13. That is probably a good choice for comments. Most of my spam doesn't show up on the post and I just go in to clear them from time to time but that might help the no-reply ones that go to my other spam. I will give that some thought. Let me know how you like it. Sounds like a busy week for you!!!

  14. I wondered why you changed it. I am just getting by tonight. I had all seven here today. Gosh I am beat. It sounds like you will be busy the rest of the week. I know after the kids and Moms all go home and I get the house finally cleaned up I can hardly keep my eyes open.
    It all sounds good.

  15. I don't look in my spam either - I have taken anonymous off my blog and I don't think I have any - but I will check. sandie

  16. A lot of my comments received had gone into my spam folder, but lately they haven't. Its weird. I can see why you want to try comment moderation to see if you get the comments when they come in. I have a few blogs where I leave comments and I see the comment there on their blog but when I go back to check on them again, the comment is gone (and they haven't removed it). I have to comment on those blogs through Google Chrome. Wish blogger would get their act together, LOL :)

    Yum on the watermelon!

It does sound like a busy week indeed! You'll be looking forward to a Sunday afternoon nap :)

  17. Blogger has a glitch today...I'm having problems getting comments to go through.

I'll try a 2nd time. Maybe two is a charm.

Watermelon...oh, indeed. Summer is a whole lot better with watermelon. And I love fresh corn right from the garden...with gobs of butter, but I cut the kernels off the cob.

20?...ex husband?!! I won't ask, but I must say the age sounds mighty close to mine...I left at 19 to marry Bud.

  18. Yeah, I lose my "virtue" all the time! LOL!
I'm loving the Thomas Edison quotes some people are putting in their posts!
